I recently came to learn of "Stepping" of Engineering/Qualification Samples. I realize now Stepping gets its own field in CPU-Z. I never paid it any mind.
Here's the thing. While there's numerous mentions of "stepping" and "final stepping" all over this forum and the innerwebz, putting "final stepping" plus QA or EC or "Engineering Sample" or "Qualification Sample" into the google machine doesn't tell me how to discover what a final stepping of a CPU generation is.
So how does one come to learn what the final stepping for an i7 920xm or 940xm is?![]()
-thanx!

Look at Intel's CPU 'Ark' page. It lists the Core i7 940XM Extreme Edition's stepping to be B1. I presume this to be the finalized version, since ordering in bulk would be for retail/OEM usage.
See here: IntelĀ® Core i7-940XM Processor Extreme Edition (8M Cache, 2.13 GHz)with SPEC Code(s)SLBSC
Click on the left where it says Ordering / sSpecs / Steppings". In the table, look at where it says "Step". There's your answer. -
Ah, the enigmatic 'Step' laid bare! +rep to you my friend. much thanx!
