I live in the UK and can see there is a market for graphics upgrades and can't see why nobody seems to supply graphic cards for laptops.
I am looking to buy a new laptop from dell. I don't want to plash out for the overpriced xps range and see the inspiron 1720 specs ok for the money. The best graphics card in the insprion range is a 8600m GT with 256 mb ram ddr2
I would of thought they would of at least done the 8700m GT or anycard you were willing to pay the extra for. The woman on the other end of the phone said the mobo can only handle the 8600 GT which I laughed at seeing I build all my own pc's. Dells laptops are very easy to change a dedicated graphics card.
Another gripe I have with dell UK is a upgrade from a T7250 is around £130 or $260 but in the US its $50 or £25.
What I do know they will give at least 10% discount over the phone.
After all my moaning does anybody know where I can source a mobile graphics card and have it shipped to the UK
Help will be appreciated.
Does anybody know what mobo dell uses, there are 2 different types.

Dell uses proprietary sockets for their graphics cards.
I think the only dell laptop with MXM is the XPS1730.
You cannot upgrade to a 8700 on the inspiron 1720.
If it supports up to the 8600Gt, than thats the fastest gpu which you can put in there.
There is nothing you can do about it.
You are not going to be able to find a mor epowerful gpu which will fit in your laptop.
If you want a more powerful graphics card, why not look into the xps1530, it is not that much more expensive

I will have to find the forum again but it was linked to a dell technical page how to upgrade graphics. The 8700GT is just a overclocked 8600GT. The 1520 has only got intregrated graphics with no option of a upgrade. Dell do a xps 1710 which will take more graphic cards but the highest processor is T7600. The 1720 can take all the way upto T9500 but only a 8600 GT.
Dell do a 1920X1200 screen for the 1720 with a 8600GT, but I thibk the card would struggle with such a high resolution.
Its very frustrating
Dell upgrade processor from a T7250 to a T8300 is US $75 UK £130 upgrade to T9300 US $200 UK £200 = $400. I made a mistake in my original post saying the upgrade price from the T7250 to T8300
So what is the best laptop to buy which can be upgraded, well that is if I can find somewhere to buy a card from. I haven't been alble to find something as basic as dvd drive which can be bought. Planned to put blue ray in sometime in the future when drives drop in price. Another dell UK rip off, blue ray drive US $400 UK £300 = $600.
I might just leave it for a few months. I would of gone for the 1710 xps if the processor could of been upgraded past T7600.
It would be a sorry state if the desktop market was like the laptop. At least when you buy a desktop you can put in any graphics card in pci express slot.
I have 2 desktops and and need another computer but there is no room for a desktop so I need a laptop. Scream. Makes me wonder if dell buys up out going stock to put in their laptops. The different in proce for a mobo that will take any graphics card and any processor probably isn't nmuch more than the 1720 mobo, but then dell would be able to charge the price they can for their 1730 xps, know the 8800gtx sli card would cost a small fortune, but a 8800gt would be a good card and the soon to be released 9600GT would be a nice card. I am willing to pay upto $2000 to $2500 for a laptop. -
