Will a Firewire 800 be able to generate enough power to run a 3.5" external hard drive, Seagate 300GB Barracuda IV without the need of an external power supply?
-
Probably not. There are several IEEE1394 power classes, where the highest delivers 1A@12V. Barracudas apparently rev up using 2.6A. So, even in the unlikely event they fitted a laptop with 1amp, it couldn't handle it.

Oh thank you for your reply
This is the power specs of the hdd enclosure i'm getting:

Input: AC 100-240V, 1.2A, 50-60Hz
Output: DC +12V/3A

So is there any other 3.5" hard drives that doesn't use as much power?
