    Firewire 800 and HDD

    Will a Firewire 800 be able to generate enough power to run a 3.5" external hard drive, Seagate 300GB Barracuda IV without the need of an external power supply?

    Probably not. There are several IEEE1394 power classes, where the highest delivers 1A@12V. Barracudas apparently rev up using 2.6A. So, even in the unlikely event they fitted a laptop with 1amp, it couldn't handle it.

    This is the power specs of the hdd enclosure i'm getting:

    Power
    Universal auto-switching (UL, cUL, CE, TUV approved)
    Input: AC 100-240V, 1.2A, 50-60Hz
    Output: DC +12V/3A
