My roommate just bought Stanton Final Scratch 2.0, which allows one to use a "digital" record player to scratch music from a computer. The only problem is that it requires a firewire input and the Compaq Presario C302NR laptop does not come with a PCMCIA slot. Is there any way to hook up firewire or am I correct in my assumption that he will have to purchase a new laptop?

The Compaq Presario C302NR only has USB, Ethernet, WiFi, S-Video Out, Video Out, Mic-In and a headphone jack.

I thought that a usb port hub with firewire just allows you to connect usb to usb and firewire to firewire. Can I connect a firewire device to the hub and then connect the hub to my laptop via USB?

Not on that one, but a USB to firewire adapter probably does exist.

    They do not.

I believe USB and Firewire are hardware configured? If that makes sense. Meaning you cant emulate firewire through usb and usb through firewire.

He doesnt have an express port for one. And two, no they do not exist. In order to take advantage of the firewire hub you need an existing firewire port, it just replicates it.

Here is a quote on the Firewire USB hub website you posted, "Note: this unit does not convert USB to FireWire or vice versa"

So, no they dont exist. You will need a laptop with a pcmcia slot, or just find a cheapo pc and get a firewire card.

    Case closed :p

If you read the original post. His room mate purchased a device that uses firewire port. His Compaq does not have a pcmia card slot. So the hub I posted would work. You plug it into a usb and true it will not convert, but it will allow you to use an firewire port on it. So back to you...lol...they do and do not exist.

Um no. Not trying to be rude. Maybe go to a store and look at it closer? You need a firewire input on your computer (or motherboard) to use the firewire function of the hub.

"Q Is there an adapter to convert Firewire to USB so I can plug a Firewire device into my USB port?
A No. As mentioned above, they are not compatible and conversion devices are not (as far as we are currently aware) available. "

"...and it is not possible to connect a USB device to a Firewire port either directly or through the use of a Firewire to USB adapter." and "...a Firewire to USB adapter does not exist, and cannot exist because of differences in the two technologies..."

Sooooooo, he needs a new computer.

Ok let's all just take a break. Let's re-read the original post. The device requires a firewire port and it does not come with a pcmia slot. So does it come with a firewire port. On my laptop, my firewire port is not the normal size as it is smaller. Maybe the same thing. All the love of technology. So my apologies to anyone out there. But if his laptop does not have a pcmia slot, does it have an express card slot or is the laptop so old that it might be a speak n spell? LOL. jk... :D

Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to sell this laptop online and get one with a PCMCIA slot. What kind of laptop does not have this feature? I would understand if it were a smaller laptop that could not fit the PC card, but this is a full size laptop. Note to self: don't purchase from Compaq.

Well I read online that it was a budget laptop, I guess they were just trying to cut corners to keep the price low. Just be sure when you buy it, ask the rep if it has either Pcmcia or Expresscard. Both will work with a firewire card. Or, alot of laptops lately will have firewire built on. Also called, "IEEE 1394" if you look up detailed specs.

Yep you need to get a 4pin to 6pin cable. The one on our latops is 4 pin and on a normal pc is 6pin. It will look like this one...

Keep in mind that HP owns Compaq. They are better now. Also, most laptops now have a built in firewire and or pcmia/xpress card slot. Just before you buy, look. On Dell's they are standard.
