I have Vaio F11 and the instructions for the Crucial M4 firmware update are following:

Change SATA mode to IDE mode
From BIOS Setup, change the SATA mode to IDE or Legacy mode or “compatibility mode.” The firmware update will
not work in AHCI mode. Look for a parameter named “SATA Configuration”, or possibly “Integrated Peripherals”.

I havent any options to select SATA mode, so what to do? I have not SSD yet, I afraid If I will be able to update firmware. Thanks for answers!

I would get an external drive enclosure and connect it to usb.(or usb data cable)
And boot from CD or USB flash to update firmware.
There maybe ways easier than this and I am sure one will come up with the best answer. but I can't think of any other right now.

There must be a valid reasoning behind that I am not aware of. Since I am not
a computer specialist I wouldn't know. not that I care about it though.

I accidentally updated my C300's firmware in AHCI mode once. There were no issues.
