A little activity in the Samsung forum has revealed a live update software for the Samsung and Toshiba-Samsung (eg TS-L and SN optical drives at http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/ . The live update seems to work well and avoids the risk of flashing a drive with the wrong firmware.

Updated firmware often fixes optical drive reading and writing problems.

Nice! I have a friend whose SN-series drive has all sorts of issues, maybe this will get him up and burning again... Thanks for the heads up, John.
