Just got the new machine by FEDEX. I have it out the box . . . just sitting here looking at it . . . it came with 1GB . . . got 4GB chips sitting next to it ready to pop in.

Haven't put the battery or the new chips in yet.

    Don't want to make a mistake . . . what should I do first?

Is there a thread to advise steps to take when firing up a new notebook?

Could use some advice! Yes, I have had numerous laptops before (still have a couple of older models now), but don't want to make any mistakes with this one! :)

    Here are the specs:

    HP dv9500t, Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7500 (2,2GHz/4MB L2Cache), 17" WSXGA+ Brightview Widescreen (1680x1050), 4GB DDR, Vista Home Premium, 511MB NVidia GeForce 8400M GS, Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN w/Bluetooth, 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive. Lightscribe SuperMulti, High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Battery

I would power on first with ac power and the battery installed and make sure that everything is working, check the ram that's installed to see that it registers. Then you can turn it off, install your ram and turn on again and see if it registers, though you will probably only see 3.5gb of ram since 32 bit can't recognize 4gb's. Don't know the ins and outs of that but there are other posts about it. Congrats on the new toy!!

    1) Disassemble
    2) Clean and Lubricate
    3) Reassemble
    4) Enjoy

Yeah that would be my next step. That way if anything happens while you are getting used to it, software wise, then you can go back to the original. There is a great tutorial http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=547 on this website that gives you a step by step guide to clean up the bloatware. HP's do tend to have a lot bloat on them. The programs you have to download are free, autoruns and ccleaner, I use both and they are free and easy to use. Hope this helps and post any problems that come up. BTW, that's a nice computer!
