    Hello all -
My Thinkpad T61's minuscule 50 gigabyte hard drive has reached capacity and I wanted to upgrade so I don't have to lug my external drive everywhere I go.

I've been doing some research, as I have not done a hard drive upgrade so far, and wanted to check with the experts to avoid a heart attack later.

I checked in the device manager and found that my current drive is model # ST960813AS - according to Google this is a 2.5" drive - so 1) will any 2.5" internal hard drive fit into my Thinkpad?

    2) I plan to back up my files on my external hard drive or copy the drive as a whole on my external hard drive, switching out internal hard drives, and then putting the info from the external onto the new internal. Is that sound?

    3) Are there any internal hard drive brands I should veer away from? I really need to keep this purchase under $100...the drives I have been looking at so far are of the Western Digital and Seagate variety.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to guide me through this.
