I am pretty sure that the Hitachi E7K1000 is the fastest 1TB drive you can buy. Storage review, and a bunch of other websites agree.
That review site is old where the 1TB drives were 5 200gb platters. Now they have 333Gb platters, and 500Gb platters. The higehr data density makes the new ones faster.

They are, of course, desktop drives, so not strictly relevant here except as fast external storage connected using eSATA.

At the moment the manufacturers are giving us only 500GB in 2.5" format, but I expect this to increase during 2009.

The Western Digital Caviar Black is supposed to be at the top currently.
