try to reset the ram and the wifi, the GPU too.
Are all the above elements detected correctly by the bios? -
as far as i know they are, i'm definetly sure ram is.
-
more info about the laptop... made, specs...
-
IBM Thinkpad r50e 40gb hdd and 256mb ram is all i know.
-
when does it freeze exactly? when Windows is loadig?
freezing = 1- faulty OS or 2- hardwre problem.
Try to reset the HDD connection again just in case -
If the problem started to occur after you removed the harddrive, it is best to take the harddrive out, and reconnect it. Your system uses an IDE based harddrive, so if the pins are not properly aligned in the IDE socket on the motherboard, the drive will not be recognized.
If necessary, you may have to apply some force on the end of the harddrive to make sure it is properly connected.

would it work without a hdd? also it hasn't got an os, only a linux partition.. EX2 but it didn't install because the copy of DL i have is faulty lol.
-
The live CD will work without haddrive
-
i can load the live disc if the hdd isn't in there.
-
Is that a question ? Err, YES.
-
no lol, i have loaded the live cd without the hdd lol so what's wrong with the hdd

OK
try to clean the connection with alcohol and test again.
see if yo can test this harddrive on another laptop, and another harddrive in your laptop.
Is your HDD sata or IDE?
Testing your HDD in another laptop will let you know if the HDD is or not at fault
Testing another HDD in your laptop will allow you to know if the HDD connection in your laptop is or not at fault. If your HDD uses the IDE format you can get a 6gb HDD from ebay at a cheap price just to test he connetion.
Guys isn't there an options in the bios for sata drives?
P.S.
It may sound stupid check if there is any jumper on the HDD. If you found any then remove them. -
i don't have any other hdd's.. or another laptop to test it on.
also there's no jumpers and the hdd is IDE also i don't have any money whatsoever for ebay lol if not i'll just run the laptop from the live cd :l
and i have no alcohol xD -
You can carry on using the live CD and use a USB stick to save your file on.
Troubleshooting hardware work in two ways. First, through using very expensive equipments. Second, testing the different bits by replacing them with none faulty ones, then check if the problem has disappeared.
You need o test your HDD or at least ask the prvious owner if this laptop was faulty before he gave it to you.
If you have a desktop you could use one of these to test your HDD
2.5" to 3.5" HDD conerter
or 2.5" IDE to USB
or 2.5" SATA to USB -

you may just need to change the CMOS battery. testing the battery is a easy. Go to the bios set the time and date, save ad turn the laptop off. remove the power supply and the laptop battery (the big battery) for a while (one hour maybe) then turn the latop ON again and check if the time and date are correct. If the time and date are not correct you need change this battery. -

ok thanks, i'll try that tomorrow when i have more time
Freezes on boot
