Product: HP Pavilion zv5000
Symptom: Fans kick on, no other activity
Cause: Took apart and put AS5 on CPU when I got it. Apparently I accidentally got AS5 in the socket before I started it up.
Yes, I started it up.
So, what to do now?
-
-
Maybe neither. Get a bit of isopropyl alcohol and dab it into the socket with a q-tip. Clean out the holes and around the CPU pins with a soft tipped tooth brush. Wait for everything to dry thoroughly, maybe use a bit of compressed air to blow out the socket if the isopropyl made the AS5 dry and crumbly.
-
You should also ensure that everything is properly connected, particularly the video display connection.
-
Took it down to just mobo/cpu/stick of ram after cleaning.
Nothing, just fans for 2 seconds and the LEDs stay on. -

What GPU do you have?
-
-
That's a pretty slick GPU. I used to have it.

what CPU do you have?
-
Pentium 4 3.0ghz
-
Perhaps you forgot to lock the CPU into the socket when you powered it on?
-
That's probably the CPU, then, but it's pretty well impossible to tell for sure without swapping in another one. And putting a known good CPU in a possibly bad motherboard is a bad idea. Do you have access to another machine that can take that CPU?
Or there could still be AS5 somewhere causing problems. -
Actually the first time yes, but after I tried powering it on again after I locked it in still is not working.
-
-
I didn't follow Intel much during Netburst, especially mobile, so I don't know much about the different speeds available in different sockets. Will this work for you? Being only $25 shipped, it might be worth the chance at frying it.
-
I'm thinking that should work.
Only good thing is this laptop was free, so if I spent 6 on AS5 and 25 on this and it works it'll be 30 total.
Fried MOBO or CPU?
