My WD 320 gb 5400 is dying (SMART reports errors). I was thinking of getting something a bit larger.
Any thoughts regarding the Fujitsu MJA2500BH-G2 500GB 5400 (Newegg, $86 shipped)? Reliable and cool/quiet operation would be nice.

A large repair operation I know believes Hitachi to be the least reliable of the major drive manufacturers, so I'm a bit hesitant to go for a Hitachi.

If you have doubts about Hitachi's reliability (I personally don't) then get a WD 5000bevt. It's pretty fast, runs cool and power efficient.
It will outperform the Fujitsu.
Starting at $73. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=wd5000bevt&cid=16268454636543444742&sa=title#p -
The big problem with Fujitsu hard drives now is that they are now Toshiba hard drives (Toshiba acquired Fujitsu's hard drive line last October). While older Fujitsu made hard drives were good quality, the Toshiba made Fugitsu's are just as bad as the Toshiba drives.

and if u are really that fearful , get the WD scropio... its quite good but stay away from the seagate momentus 7200.4 drives... they might be 7200rpm , but the scropio is still faster in real usage and is way more reliable... these seagate drives love dieing...
Fujitsu 500gb?
