My contrarian nature means that I've spent my money on the Fujitsu MHZ2320BH 320GB rather than one of the other makes of 320GB. There were two basic reasons for this decision: (i) The data sheet claims slightly lower power consumption (read/write 1.9W); and (ii) it is cheaper (in UK)

So, with lower power and lower price, how does it perform. I put it into an IcyBox IB-266 enclosure, which as an eSATA port and connected it to my eSATA ExpressCard adaptor.

The results (HDTune transfer rate of 64MB/s reducing down to 30MB/s, average access time of 17.2ms) aren't class leading but are very respectable and slightly ahead of the WD2500BEVS. See the attached. I am also providing the results for the same HDD/enclosure connected via USB to show the difference that eSATA brings.

    eleron911 yes 5400

John if this makes you a contrarian/value investor, lower power usage less money. Well does not speak well for the status quo.

    As far as I know, the hitachi 7200 320 one uses 1.8 W :)

Fujitsu rarely gets mentioned in our discussions of HDD options and, in my past experience the Fujitsu HDDs have tended to be quiet, cool and a bit slower. In this example the performance seems to be good.

It claims 1.8W for read/write but is 2.2W for seek. Fujitsu doesn't separate those two.

Overall, 7200 will use a bit more power to keep the platters spinning faster. This tends to show as a higher idle power.

I`m in the market for speed. Losing 5-10 min of battery is not an issue.
    I hate my 120 Fujitsu 5400 rpm.
    It`s soooooooooooooooooooo sloooooooooooooooooow.
My next one will have to be a 7200 rpm one, either 320 gb or 500 :D

The MHZ2320BH is now installed in my Zepto. I think it is a bit noisier than the WD2500BEVS that it has replaced. The heads make a bit of a mumbling noise when SuperFetch is busy but would only be audible in a quiet room.

For comparison, HDTune results for the Hitachi and WD 320GB 5400rpm HDDs are in this thread. The MHZ2320BH is just behind the WD but ahead of the Hitachi.

A couple of comments after nearly two weeks usage.

    1. The HDD temperature, after about 14 hours operation in an ambient temperature of 23°C, is 40°C. This is 2 to 3°C cooler than I have previously observed for the WD2500BEVS under similar conditions suggesting slightly lower power consumption.

    2. When I looked at the battery drain I found it was 1or 2 Watts lower than it used to be. This is more than I would expect from a slightly more power efficient HDD. The mainboard in my Zepto was changed and it is possible that the new one leaks less power.

So far, I'm very happy with this purchase.

BTW, Tom's Hardware has now added this HDD to the charts. Perhaps the speed made them think it was 7200rpm! The maximum power consumption is not what I would expect since this HDD is cooler than the WD2500BEVS.

Very interesting. I'm thinking they made some kind of mistake.

The Win XP startup performance is 8,8 MB/sec. That's faster than any other drive, including Hitachi 7K320 and WD Black Scorpio.

Maybe they mixed up model names confusing it with a 7200rpm drive. Or maybe there is a model with the same name that has 7200rpm. Google shopping seems to think so.

Edit: I think I've found it. The 7200 rpm is Mobile MHZ2320B J and 5400 rpm is MHZ2320B H. Seems Tom made a typo.

Managed to get a MHZ2320BH G1 for testing. Compared to the Seagate 7200.3 320GB (which I also have at hand), it is helluva lot quieter and frankly I can't feel the difference with a clean XP Pro, of course besides HD Tune scores, which are in line with Ratsey`s.

    If anyone`s interested, I can compare Samsung`s HM160HI, the old two-platter Rev A and the newer single-platter Rev B.

Hi Silc, i noticed from one of your posts that you've had a few clevo's apart. Any Chance you could help me i've got a clevo m55n (mesh m550n) im tryin to disassemble for a power jack repair but cant seem to get the last screw or 2 out so i can split the chassis. I think they're under the keyboard but dont know how to get the keyboard out to see? The screw(s) are roughly in the middle of the battery bay about a centimetre in from it, any help much appreciated as its been sat here for 3months now waiting to be repaired, cant get disassembly guide or service guide anywhere!

Look at your keyboard, between the F-1 through F12 keys and the plastic chassis.
Their should be 4 very small plastic pieces. One at each end, and two in the middle. or one in the middle if its a smaller system.
Just use a small flathead and push them in, and voila the keyboard pops out. I have seen many clevo's and all of them have this spring released keyboard mechanism, so hopefully yours does to.
You may want to create your own thread next time, cause this one doesnt make much sense in a harddrive thread ;)

I just noticed mine spiked really low at the begining, I assume thats a glitch, but the results are almost Identical otherwise. Which I good to know.

Why does your have only half the amount of yellow dots though?

EDIT: Sorry, posted in the wrong thread, but its still relavant

Those downward spices in the graph are casued by other applications accessing the HDD during the test.
I've also been wondering this. It's the result of the access time test but i don't know why it sometimes stops at 60%.

There may be more than just a typing mistake going on at Tom's. I don't think they even know what drive they tested.

    For the MHZ2 series:
The BH is 5400k w/ an 8mb buffer.
The BJ is 7200k w/ an 16mb buffer.

So, they say they tested a BH @ 7200K w/ an 8mb buffer, no such animal exists. Can we guess they tested a BH and goofed on the rpm's, or a BJ typo'd as a BH and goofed on the cache.

Tom's Hardware corrected their site (I queried it with them). It was the 7200 RPM BJ. Go and look now.

I dont trust their results either. My Hitachi 7K320 (160Gb) does better in XP startup performance than the one mentioned. Pc Mark05 said about 9.4mb/sec the last time I checked on my system.
