Dear Matt (ComputerMD82),
I am writing in reference to your post in Notebookforums with regards to the Wifi Card change in the Asus G51J. I hope you are well. I have a small query.
My G51J is a little buggy with the wifi and I am experiencing speed drops and hops. It barely goes above 27Mbps and at times even remains at 13Mbps, inspite of having wireless N router. My netbook the Asus N10J has a atheros wireless card and was bought in Sept 2008. That lil netbook stays at 300mbps all the time, but then why cant this $1800 laptop keep up with the speeds? I am sick of the wifi 1000BGN Card which comes with this model.
I have researched on the web and found that this card is indeed buggy. I would want you to advice me which model to upgrade to and also guide me to do so, if possible. I am unsure about the antenna structure in the G51J and how to connect the new card. Also I do not know what form factor is the card, is it PCI Express Mini or is it Half Mini. I do not know.
Please suggest me which card to go for, the Intel WiFi 6300 or the Intel WiMax 5350? I have read about people's experiences and some of them have installed the 6300 model, including yourself. Please guide me how to install the card and what to do with the third external antenna that comes with the 6300. All your help will be much appreciated. The laptop otherwise is running fine and hasn't given any problems since I got it replaced from GentechPC. Especially after Asus released there latest BIOS firmware update which apparently took care of all the bluescreen errors.
Anticipating your response.
Thanks very much.
Best regards,
SAM

First of all, I assume you have the G51J and not the G51JX, which I have read is not compatible. I'm not sure why, perhaps someone else familiar with this model can tell us?
Anyway, in the G51J, the Wifi 1000 is a half length mini PCIE card, held in with 2 screws. There are 2 antennas connected, with the 3rd taped to the top of the card. For the 6300, that third antenna should be connected to the middle connector on the card. I've shown a picture of the 6300 in my machine installed.
The 6300 is the best card available for the Asus G51J.

Please let me know if you need any further help!
