I was reviewing the document information on Intel technologies http://download.intel.com/design/mobile/datashts/31627303.pdf

I reviewed the PM965 chipset and GM965 chipset on that document. Having bought a new Latitude D630 with 512mb ram, I was planning to buy a 2gb stick to add up to a total of 2.5gb of ram in my notebook.

Does this mean that I CAN'T use the 2gb stick of ram?

Which specific page are you look at? There's over 500 pages in that document.

I think there's an easier way to answer your question. Go and see what RAM options does Dell offer for the D630? I know that 4GB (2 x 2GB) is an option for the M1330 which also has the I865 chipset. In fact, I've read somewhere else that the I965 chipset will support more than 4GB, except that the modules are not available. I also know from my own experience that the I945 chipset supports 2GB modules because there's one in the notebook I am using.

Does Bios ever matter on this issue! My gatway specs say max 1GB stick, SiSoft say I can have 4GB total, so I am interested in this.

I don't think the BIOS matters. It is the chipset which addresses the RAM. If it its any help, I tested a 2GB module in the Samsung R20 which has the 1250M chipset. It worked. However, I did find that the computer was fussy about which module was in which slot if I mixed modules of different speeds.

That is bits, not bytes, note the small b. It supports 1gb chips, of which there can be several on a memory stick.
