My laptop is overheating and i have a new one on its way as we cant work out what is wrong.
I can play certain games on battery as my system will slow down on battery so not create the heat is there an option somewhere to run at this pace when plugged in so i can play more than an hour?
I ahve an alienware 5700 with a GF 6800 running xp

they been cleaned, its a fairly new GPU as it had to be replaced, and someone that knows about computer (as i dont) has been inside and reseated stuff and put some sort of cooling stuff in etc nothing works.
Also i have sorted it myself needed to download extra tools to the nvidia thing you can get by right clicking on desktop needed powermizer and set to balanced on ac instead of performance -
I'd recommend underclocking if all else fails. There's several programs you can use to underclock; amongst them are nTune and RivaTuner. What's probably happening is that PowerMizer is forcing 2D speeds on battery, but while you're on AC it's using faster (and hotter) 3D speeds. The solution is to downclock the 3D speeds (assuming you can't find a better solution that actually makes it run cooler). Note that nTune, which integrates into the nVIDIA Control Panel after installation, only affects 3D speeds, whereas RivaTuner allows you to change 2D, low 3D, and 3D. You should only need to change 3D.
I've done just the opposite myself, making it run faster and hotter on battery. -
Have you tried undervolting the CPU? This cut about 5C off my laptop temperatures. There is a good guide to doing this that is normally on the first page of the hardwares section.
Also, in Vista, you can set the maximum CPU used in the power options. I don't remember if this was available in XP. If not, RMClock could be used. The undervolting guide should give you an idea of how to do this.
