I own a Compaq c552us and am wondering if removing the material on the GPU sink and replacing it with AS5 would improve cooling. I have had excellent results with AS5 in the past but I'm not sure about this instance as I don't have much experience with laptop hardware. Thanks!

Hi.
Find below a guide, it`s not for your laptop, but it has lots of good information!

Thanks Tinderbox +rep. The material on my sink is more like fabric as in it looks weaved. Would that make any difference if say I was to implement the fore-mentioned procedure?

thermal pads can be quite thick, and if you replace them with thermal paste, you can leave a gap between the heatsink and core and your system will overheat! , so be careful!

sylvester, how thick is this fabric?
The fabric is most likely a thermal pad. The problem is, if you replace the pad with paste, their will be a gap between the gpu core and the heatsink.
This is because the pad is much thicker than the paste. If their is a gap, the heat will not be transferred to the heatsink, and your temperatures will increase.
if the fabric/pad is really thin, like the thickness of paper, than you should be able to swap the pad for paster.
But if the pad is thick, than its a bad idea applying paste.
