What are the chances of an mxm version GTX 1060 working in a Clevo P150SM or P150SM-A (Sager NP8268)?

The size looks right. I just want to know if the system can support it.

A two and a half year old platform? I'd say zero to none.

(Hope I'm proved wrong for your sake). :)

Depends if that motherboard has eDP display support or not.

    @D2 Ultima

Also the Optimus implementation, need more info on that.

Those two systems don't support eDP and even if it managed to work, the cooling system will be terrible

You need eDP support so unless you have the 120Hz screen, your at a dead end!

It doesn't look like it will work, good to know. Eventually I'll get a P750DM2-G with either the 1060 or 1070, but it's not in the budget at the moment... For now I'll upgrade from my 870m to the 980m and be glad that I have a nice mobile gaming rig. I finally got around to making it a dual boot OS X El Cap/Windows 10, so that's fun. Thanks again to Prema and RehabMan for the help! :D

    Thank you for the input!

Yes, this is the best option for now to upgrade to GTX 980M. Both GTX 1070 and 1060 won't be supported in SM/SM-A models. Then later you can move to Kaby Lake version of P750DM maybe even with 120Hz panel.

Yes the size of 1060 is standard MXM 3.0b like GTX 980M however placement of key components on the card is different so the vga heatsink doesn't fit. It can't be also modified as we would need to chop some pipes so then heatsink would do what I suppose to do

    I see...

As far as the eDP, I do believe this PC has one. At least, it states that in the service manual. Also, this PC is capable of running a 120Hz external monitor, so I believe it could run a 120Hz screen. However, as it was stated, this card will be physically limited by the shape and size of parts on the board.

P150SM uses LVDS LCD panels only not eDP so eDP panels are not supported.

Do you know what the eDP on the motherboard is used for? I'm just curious.

I looked through the service manual the other day and it doesn't make sense to me, but the LVDS is routed to the eDP. I wonder if the LVDS could somehow be bypassed.

Sorry to bring this back, but I'm hoping to get a few 15" models that can take the GTX 1060 mxm version. What I know so far is:

    Cleve p750zm
    Cleve p750dm
    MSI GT62

I can get a 1060 for a good price, so I'm hoping to find one of these models with an older GPU for cheap that I can swap out the GPU on.

Anyone can give an insight why you would need edp if the implementation is muxless optimus?
the lvds runs via the intel igp i dont see how this is any relevant...

There is no LVDS support in the pascal vBIOS, everything it runs is over eDP. It only works over eDP or systems that can internally convert eDP to LVDS (which has been the case in a certain clevo model and the M17x R4)

doesnt make any sense. P150sm doesnt use neither lvds or edp from the dgpu.

    Remember this is (muxless) optimus.

It is still passing through the intel hd graphics is still doing the eDP-> LVDS conversion. P150SM uses LVDS. Prema was able to mod the BIOS to allow POST after finaggling with it, but still uses intel hd graphics to convert the signal from eDP to LVDS.

to get full dGPU with no iGPU, it set to passthrough only (no intel hd graphics recognized), but you can also set to SG/powerexpress/optimus if you want to use intel hd + dGPU. Regardless, signal passes through iGPU. very rare that laptops have mux switch.

    Dead wrong.

video is transferred through pcie to intel hd to lcd screen. so display interface doesnt matter a thing here... dGPU doesnt send its buffer via edp :p
Read up how optimus works. Maybe figure out how these egpu (like razer) work, dont tell me now that the gpu pass edp via thunderbolt :p please do some research first.

It would be awesome if a 1060 could be made available to work with the p150sm-a and msi laptops of the same generation. I think it would be in high demand.
