I know this has been asked quite a bit, but that was before a card like this one existed and I would love to know if it's possible. If not, please tell me why. If it can work, please help me find the system BIOS that will allow it to happen.
Thank you!

for what i know, this laptop isn't yet upgraded with pascal cards -
It seems possible to me. I want to try it, but don't want to make an expensive mistake. So the more info I can get, the better.

You are a pioneer in this upgrade

Perhaps I should ask for some donations before proceeding to attempt this. I work hard for a living and have a family who depends on me. If I didn't have such responsibilities I'd be more willing to venture into this on my own expense.

Please: concentrate/focus on your family obligations and leave potential upgrades to those that can.
A hobby that can potentially rip apart your life is called an addiction. And addictions shouldn't be rewarded, nor donated towards.

Tilleroftheearth is right, family first is also my motto, however this is not an addiction for me and I always put family first. I'm not a gamer. My laptop is an asset rather than a liability. I'm a 3D designer (mostly landscapes) in the Los Angeles area and my 970m works well enough to get me by, however, on the bigger, more detailed, higher paying projects, it crashes quite often, especially when rendering the large 360 virtual walk-throughs. When it crashes an hour into the render, forcing me to restart the process, valuable time is wasted. It also sometimes crashes unexpectedly during the modeling phase. I had the same problem with the 980m on my P150SM-A, but I thought it might be the processor. That's why I upgraded to the P750DM with a desktop CPU. There are only so many hours in a day I can work and when clients start piling up, wasted time can cost me in client loss, which equals lost money. So, the question here is whether the performance gain is worth the cost of the GPU. Also, the reason I work mobile isn't because I often need to be able to sit down with the client on locatation and make changes with them. Spending money on 3D capable desktop as well as a mobile machine is more costly than simple upgrading the laptop. With all of this said, the 1060 IS able to work in this machine, with the right card and a modified BIOS, and I plan to do this soon. The thought of taking donations for a go at this was just that, a thought. I also would have returned all of the money if it worked out successfully, but it's not needed.
Thank you for all of the replies,

quadro cards are more stable and some 3D applications work better with themLast edited: Jun 28, 2017tilleroftheearth likes this. -

Thanks for the additional info.
I think you may be using the wrong platform (especially the 'gaming' cards) as this is for paid work. If/when I lose an hour of work because of hardware error/failure; I make sure it never happens again (i.e. that system is put up for donation... - not for critical work scenarios).
The idea of donating to such a project leaves a bad taste in my mouth (even if $$$$ are promised to be returned). But maybe it's just me.

Tiller,
The "perhaps" (perhaps is defined as expressing uncertainty or possibility of) statement of potentially asking interested parties to support to cause via donation was a thought I dismissed shortly after I posted that statement when I realized it wasn't a good idea. I never asked for a single donation and I t was nothing more than thinking out loud, as a figure of speech. I am human, not perfect, I sometimes have bad ideas that I express before thinking it through. You've expressed your opinion and it coincides with mine, so further condemnation will be considered trolling. Moving on...
Sicily,
Quadro would be much better suited for my applications, however they are significantly more expensive (about 3x more) than the GeForce for the amount of computing power they provide. I have considered going that route a few times, but dollar for dollar, I believe the GeForce will outperform the quadro with the work I do. The 3D apps I use are AutoCAD with LandFX, Solidworks, sketchup Pro, and VIP3D. Aside from that I use Photoshop to edit the very large images sometimes, and Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing and rendering. The reason for so many programs isn't because they all have their strong points that work better for different situations. I've also started playing around with Chief Architect aince I was told it's good for interiors and can speed things up, but I don't know about it yet. -
a m3000m is 850 euros but solidworks works much better that a gtx1080 desktop
here some benchmarks
and P3000 is much better than m3000m
quadros are more stable so no freezes and they can manage thousand parts assembly without problemsLast edited: Jun 30, 2017 -
This chart is impressive, however, I had the opportunity to try out a laptop from a fellow 3D designer who uses all the same programs and I wasn't that impressed. He was using a 4k 17" screen, so it was tough to compare, but it didn't seem all that much faster than my 970m. I ended up picking up a g-sync version 980m and it will work just fine until I'm ready to upgrade to a new system with Volta eventually.
GTX 1060 that fits in Clevo P750DM-g
