Hello guys,I have an interesting question. I own two laptops. One is a GT83VR with 2x GTX 1070 and the other is a GT73VRE with a single GTX 1080. My question is can I remove the SLI setup and replace the 1070's with just the 1080 from my other system? Possibly sell the single 1070 and place the extra into the gt73vre? Any help would be greatly appreciated

No, the MSI 1080s are very strange and unique in shape and layout. I don't know which is master on that chassis but the larger 1080 wouldn't fit and screw into the chassis and the heatsink wouldn't fit and screw into the card

Even if it physically fits, you would need a different heatsink for each GPU, which could be offset by selling a 1070

The heatsinks seem to match up relativelywell.. If all the physical characteristics match would the next issue involve software/bios and or power requirements? The selling of the extra 1070 would certainly offset the price of a new heatsink. Speaking of master I was under the belief that an sli interface when switched off the master card or slave card are the same so it wouldn't be an issue. Educate me if I'm going down a fruitless wormhole.

I apologize for the delay. It seems that I was mistaken when I said this system was running 1070 sli. It is in fact running 1080 sli. No wonder from first blush the cards seemed to look familiar in size and shape. My current dilemma is this system shipped with one 230 power brick. My question is will this system function on one brick utilizing only a single 1080 card or will I need to purchase a second power brick and adapter dongle? The unit is running well now but I haven't loaded any games yet.If this is the wrong thread any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to post pics of the system. How would I attach pics to this thread?

A 230W brick is not even enough for a system with a single 1080, which by itself uses 180W.

It's not possible for a GTX 1080 SLI system to ship with a 230W PSU. No SKU ships with that.
GTX 1070 SLI in BOTH GT83VR and GT73VR ships with 2x230W.
GTX 1080 SLI ships with 2x330W.
    Single GTX 1080 (in GT73VR and GT75VR) ship with 1 330W.

1080 cards used in the GT83VR will *NOT* work in the GT73VR or GT75VR, because there is no heatsink that will fit the inverted core position. (GT73VR's GTX 1080 is NOT the same as the GT83VR's GTX 1080!). Note that on a GT73VR, swapping the 1070 for a 1080 from the same product line requires installing the 1080 VRM sink and GPU heatsink as the 1070 heatsinks will not fit the layout. The 1080 heatsinks are available; MSI sells them if you contact Tom Ho, but it will cost you a pretty penny. You can find them on Aliexpress too but you need BOTH the GPU and VRM heatsinks.

There is no such thing as any sort of custom heatsink allowing a GT83VR (or MSI 16L13)'s 1080 card to work in a GT73VR/GT75VR.

    there are NO other configurations.

Thank you for the clarification. I thought it would be too easy and straight forward for it to be a reality. Where would I purchase a 330 w x1 power supply for this unit?

You can go on ebay or buy one here, they're about $100, but you still can't use the 1080s

I purchased the MSI branded dual power supply with single dongle from Ebay for $399.
