So I have made up my mind:

I am going to buy a Dell m6700 and pop in a gtx 780m.
I've got an nvidia heatsink, so everything should be compatible physically.

    My questions are:

1). Is it plug and play, bios, drivers, etc, what should I know about? I saw stuff on that post:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...ttra-help-geforce-gtx780-dell-m-6600-a-3.html

Any clear advice, because that one was hard to understand.

2). Any advice on how to repaste the thermal pad for mxm 3,0 b gpus.

Any other stuff I need to know, I only get one chance at this, so I don't want to mess it up?

I will most likely make a video if I succed, to guide people who wish to do the same.

    Cheers from France!

    I've never 780m, but here's the drill:

    - Determine if the heatsink is appropriate by setting the card and heatsink flush and checking that no metal protrusions risk crushing any chips on the card.
    - I don't know if you have to flash vbios or not. Previous reports in the m6700 said that a 780m card extracted from alienware laptop worked without re-flash.
    - Have Windows 7 (not Windows 8) installed - it's much easier to install modded drivers.
    - Download the modded drivers: LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers (326.41 is known to work).
    - Install the card, while being careful to pad the RAM chips, inductors (cubic-shaped things) and VRM's (small black chips inbetween the inductors and around them). Apply only enough padding to fill in the gaps between heatsink and card - push the two together without and pads or paste to see how much room there is.
    - After the card is installed, disable Optimus in BIOS (actually you may want to do that beforehand, in case the card not being recognized in bios may cause some troubles).
    - The card won't be recognized in bios but should boot just fine.
    - Install drivers, then you can re-enable optimus in bios.

    That should be it.

    1) It is plug and play (with a Dell card at least), however follow post #30 on the thread you mentioned, and it should go very smoothly.
    2) If that's the first time you're going to dismantle your M6700, I'd advise you to follow that quick disassembly guide: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-latitude-vostro-precision/710800-m6700-heatsink-swap-repaste.html

I'm supporting and assisting another French buddy to make this upgrade successful (same hardware: M6700 w/ K3000M -> 780M), shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

    Hello all,
I am reviving this thread since the question is very similar.
I am contemplating purchasing an m6700 for very cheap, but with a K3000m. The upgrade options are k5000m, but also for k5100m, Since it is very much like a 780m would the process be the same? Google searching m6700 and k5100m didn't bring up any results.

Or is it not worth the extra cost and effort? The difference in price is around $300

Yes for first question, the process is the same.
Regarding the second question, I don't get it :p You plan to purchase with K3000m, but what are you planning to do with it? :)

The k3000m was the configuration that the computer came with. On the market these can be found for around $1200 to $1500. I purchased it for much less. Versions with the k5000m go for around $2400 or more.
By purchasing the cheaper unit and upgrading myself I save over $500. The premium for a factory k5000m is much much more than the value of the card itself.
By attempting to go after the k5100m, (and the right processor which I already have) I can achieve near top end m6800 performance for half the cost.
The only other thing I would like to get would be a touch screen, but those don't seem to be readily available and I don't know much about them

Kind of true, but then there is 3 year warranty on those expensive components that add to the cost.
touchwood, my m6600 with ton of self upgrades(the upgrade cost more than the machine by now xD) still running ~~

That is true. But even if they fail, replacement would still be less out than buying the configuration new.
I have been swapping computer parts around for a while, so am not too concerned. I often don't even keep a computer long enough to use warranty anyway, although that might change with this unit.

For the reasons you posted the workstation may be an exception. That said, at this point, what's done is done. And now you have the arduous duty of putting your plan into action. Good luck and don't forget to post your results.

Thanks I will. The plan is already rolling actually. I will post the results in the main K5000m or K5100m upgrading thread.
