I tried looking for a realistic benchmark, but couldn't find one. Note: whichever one I buy is ending up in a AW 17 Ranger. The 870M is ~149 with an offer button, and the M290x is ~160 And yes, I understand that the M290X is a rebranded HD 7970M. I currently have the GTX 765M

870M if it's the 6GB version, otherwise M290X.

why so? -

Because their gaming performance is similar, but more VRAM never hurts. -

M290x = higher clocked,better binned 7970m w/mature amd drivers and 4gb vram
870M = higher clocked, better binned 680M w/slightly better driver longevity and more vram.
So yes pretty comparable. However I would at this point choose M290x based on Nvidia shocking record of driver crippling their old cards. 6gb of vram is more or less overkill on this card anyway.
If you want a solidly better card get a 780M and overclock. Watch those thermals though or bite the bullet and go to a 970M.
For older LVDS machines another card to look out for is the w7170/M390x. With mature drivers and a small overclock it should be faster than a 970M although at M290x thermals (100w tdp). Much cheaper though.Last edited: Jun 30, 2018 -

680M was based on 670, 870M was based on 660 Ti.

Whatever that means. So I assume that Nvidia no longer do this then? You surprise me and it would be good to see some proof. -

Where would I find proof of something that doesn't exist? You show me proof of Kepler getting lower performance in the same games on later drivers than on earlier drivers. -

TBH, I could whip something up, it might not show that, probably the opposite, but oh well -
