I have a Gateway MX 3560U laptop that I got at a garage sale. The lady bought it at best buy, had problems with it(HD crashed), returned it several times before giving up on it (all she got was a blank screen) and sold it to me for $5.
I am somewhat pc literate so I took a chance on it. I turned it on trying to get it into safe mode. Just started pressing the F keys and viola the laptop started a system recovery.
Overall I can see no problems with it. I did do XP updates because I figured it was a few years old sititng on a shelf. Looks brand new-no recovery discs or instructions. But, I found the manual on the laptop.

I cannot get a battery icon on the taskbar. I went into CP--power options and the tabs are:
    power schemes- selected portable/laptop
advanced- selected always show icon on the taskbar ( plug shows all the time) even if i take out the plug battery icon does NOT show
    THIS IS THE PROBLEM
    hibernate- enable hibernate
    UPS-status(no options)
    details- manufacturer (none)
The UPS service is currently stopped

I cannot set any battery alarms bc there is no tab for this.

I ran the battery down til it shut off, recharged it to full charge.

According to the manual, the battery indicator should change colors... its always red-orange which isnt even an option.
When recharging there should be a lightning bolt through the power cord icon- none

Can anyone help or tell me what to do?

    THANKS
