    So I got this laptop about 3 or 4 months ago, and have loved it. Amazing performance, does everything I've ever wanted it to do flawlessly. Cheap too, it's a great buy as long as you don't mind the size. Anyways, I was one of the lucky few to have a WUXGA 1900x1200 screen in mine before Gateway silently downgraded this model to a WXGA 1400x900. I'm a graphic designer so that high rez screen was really one of the main reasons I bought this machine.

    However, it broke eventually, and I brought it into geek squad to be replaced. They assured me that there would be no issue in getting another of the same-size screens, but sure enough, when it came back, they gave me a shiny new WXGA. Major loss.

    Anyway, I've been fighting with them about it ever since, to no avail. I'm starting to give up. My question is, if I were to just go out and buy a 1200p screen for the 7801u (exact same model, but the bigger screen) from ebay and replace it myself, would it work? Or is there a direct compatibility between my video card and the monitor, so that it wouldn't work with any other screen, or even fit in the same plug?

    I personally went for a LG LP171WU1(TL)(A3) when upgrading, which differed from my stock WXGA AU Optronics B17...something-something.

    general consensus from what i gather is:-

    LG = brightest of all screens
    Samsung = stay away from
    AUO = prone to poor light distribution

    good replacement options:-

    LP171WU1TLA2
    LP171WU1TLA3
    LP171WU3TLB3

    Just be forewarned though that replacing the display can be quite time consuming. Not massively complicated, but time consuming and sometimes quite fiddly.

    The seller sent me the wrong screen model and I didnt bother to pursue the matter further by demading for the LG model to be sent out.

    I can't notice any discernible disadvantages of having a Samsung LTN170WU-L02 installed; I'm not a LCD Panel connoisseur. In fact, i'm pretty pleased with it. Viewing angles are much better than my stock WXGA AUO panel. Then again, if i ever do get my hands on an LG Panel, i'm sure that i'm bound to notice the viewing quality in comparison to the Samsung one.
