You should be able to do 1066 FSB Core 2 Duo, dunno if Gateway restricted Core 2 Quads in BIOS or whitelisted them.

PM45 might throw error messages with an older Merom processor but it should work. PM45 should be able to take 8 GB, but again adunno if Gateway restricted RAM in BIOS as well.

My best guess is CPU will run but even if it does you slow the cpu's fsb to 800 Mhz from 1066 MHz and the structure of the x7900 is 65nm. You are much better off with the native CPU for the chipset, the x9100.

As far as the ram, the PM45 limits us too 1066 MHz. You can run DDR3 1333 MHz but it will default back to 1066MHz when it runs. the 78xx runs 8GB without issue even though Gateway does not list support beyond 4GB.

Performance increase is debateable. Unless you are running alot of apps that need the ram the increase is minimal at best. For gaming unless the D3D app uses windows texture cache to a good extent you again will see minimal increases if any.

The reason the CPU interests me is the fact I found it for only 100 or so bucks... The CPU you asked me to look at was double and I don't have a job ATM (17 years old and in college).

The ram inst going ot be upgraded if no real increase is achieved. The Xtreme CPU I mentioned in OP is 2.8GHz. Does that lower MHz mean less performence than my current 2,0GHz Core 2 Duo (P7350)?

If anyone has a link to at least a 2.4GHz CPU for around 125 bucks I would love you! :D

if it works 2.8 GHz would be an increase of performance in raw calculation power. The L2 while larger would run slower so that could be a mixed bag. Unless you are being extremely CPU crippled I would suggest against it.

Again this is a gamble, probably a good gamble, but a gamble all the same. Why do you feel the need for more CPU?

I really want to play StarcraftII at its best. this 2.8ghz is WAY cheaper than the recomended 2.4 that SCII needs. I hit the minimum in this regard...

my understanding is that these work but you then loose some power management functions on the original CPU. Apparently originally MAC cpu's but compatible with ours and the bios most likely will show it with a standard designation. Again these are supposed to work, no garenty.

I think you could get a better deal off FleaBay..............

Kinda OT, but I keep seeing these Gateway machines alive and kickin'! They were a great deal when they became available but wonder why they stopped offering them as new tech came along. It was actually an awesome buy.

Gateway seems to have gotten out of the gaming laptop market. With new tech they could not keep up with Asus and others. Mine still runs like a champ.

Also Gateway took a hit wth the P7801 and P7811 as they had many issues early on with TSZ0 temps when upgrading the CPU. By the time later fixed incarnations came out the reputation of the system took hold. Also with the P78xx versions they did not alow dual support for C2D and quad CPU's. This was a fatal mistake as well...........

    All this is IMHO..................

That's really too bad. I owned a 7811 for a little while but hated Vista at the time, and it didn't sit well with XP so returned it, otherwise it was a great spec machine for the price.
