I recently decided to try and make my experiences with this old laptop bearable by upgrading its RAM. I checked gateways website and it is upgradeable from 512mb to 1gb. So I checked for the exact compatible memory type (533MHz DDR2-533 PC2-4200, 200p SODIMM, 1.8v) and bought a 1gb stick from NewEgg. I pop it in and am still getting the usual reading from the bios of 448mb. Best Buy tried to tell me it was faulty memory (even though the computer still boots up and runs as it did before). So I bought another stick from NewEgg, pop it in, same problem.
Any ideas on whats going on?
Also I thought possibly that a bios flash might solve the problem, but the only available bios upgrade for the mx3228 is to a vista system....or so says gateway. So I have no idea what to do in that regard, if indeed that is even my problem.

Most laptops have two slots for RAM, you never mentioned that in your explanation, does this laptop you're using only have one? I'm not entirely sure how I can help you... that's what I thought when I read it.
Sorry! -
yeah sorry i forgot to mention that, there is only 1 slot

What I gather is that many users have an issue with this very picky model, system reading the full 1 gigo ram.
They recommend using this ram type with great success.
cheers ...
