    Hi all,

Got a buddy's laptop here, a Gateway MX6453 which has a 90nm AMD Turion X2 TL-52 (Taylor) processor. It runs awfully warm, and I'm concerned that it may be a little unstable due to that.

I'm thinking that upgrading to a 65nm Tyler-core CPU (e.g., a TK-53 or TL-56) may reduce temperatures, but I'm not sure of compatibility. A faster CPU isn't really that necessary, so a TK-53 or TL-56 would do, I'd just like to decrease the operating temperature. Bus speeds appear similar, Both chips are Socket S1, and both chips have a DDR2 memory controller, which is what I need. These procs are also available cheap on Fleabay, so it'd be relatively easy, provided compatibility isn't an issue. Has anyone tried something like this?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

EDIT: For reference, Wikipedia listings on the Turion X2 are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turion_64_X2

Have you tried undervolting the processor?

The TL-56 will work in your friends laptop as will the TL-60 and faster processors.
The TK-53 should also be compatible. Have you updated the Bios to the latest version provided by Gateway?

Both are 65nm chips. If your friend wants more processing power stick with the TL series

its nice to see you back here

Thanks! I'm kind of busy these days with work and other things, but I do miss being around.

Gateway's BIOS setup is a little odd...

    Link

Earlier BIOS is 84.06, newer one is 68.05. What I've heard on other forums is that 68.05 is for systems already running Vista Premium, and 84.06 is for Windows MCE users planning to upgrade to Vista. This machine is currently running MCE, with no planned upgrades. I've been reluctant to upgrade the BIOS because of things being confusing on the website.

    EDIT: Current BIOS is 84.02.

The Tyler processors were released in the 2nd quarter of 2007, which is after the latest BIOS revision Gateway has.

I would think that the same hex coding is used for all TL series processors, so I think it would still work without any problem. I am not 100% sure though.

worse comes to worse you buy a TL-52 and it isnt supported by the current BIOS. While its open blow out all of the dust, and replace the thermal paste with something which works good like Arctic Silver 5, Arctic Cooling MX-2, etc
