I need some help with upgrading my PC. I've got a Gateway P-6860FX w/ a T5550 @ 1.83 GHz, 4 Gigs of RAM, and an 8800M GTS 512 Mb. I've been looking for a CPU upgrade for a while and i need some advice. I was looking at the Intel P9500, but i read elsewhere that it was not compatible w/ my PC. another choice is the intel t9600 or t9400. ummmmm.... Help?

btw it's kinda urgent 'cus i found two great deals on the p9500 AND t9600 on ebay

The Penryn-Refresh Series is not supported by the BIOS of your system.
    (Includes P8400, P8600, T9400, P9500, T9600, X9100)

Two users, one tried a T9400, and the other tried a P9500, but failed. (Both P-6860FX users)

The best CPU your system can support is the X9000.

    Nope.
Even if an updated BIOS supports it, the T9600, etc will run at reduced frequency and bus speed of 800MHz only. So, the T9600 will run at 10.5*200 = 2100MHz or 2.1GHz, instead of the full 2.8GHz.

The best Penryn is the T9500 and the only Penryn XE is the X9000. (For your system)

There are loads of Gateway users running X9000s, check out the forum.

the gateways are limited to a mulitplier of 15 which makes the highest clock the same on any extreme edition chip... 3.0Ghz. That means x7800, x7900, x9000 all top out at 3.0Ghz so the x7800 actually is the best buy unless you find an amazing deal on the x9000's. If you're not looking for an extreme edition then the best chip is the t9500 although for a better performance price ratio you should consider the t9300 or even the T8300...

You need to make sure the cpus you're looking at are Socket P 800mhz FSB.

Its a completely different chipset/platform. Even Gateway can't do anything about it. (Trade it for a P-7811FX)

Trade it ---> i.e. sell it in ebay and buy a second hand instead.
I think this what Andy meant
