I just got a refurbished Gateway P-7805u FX. It seems in good working order.

Now I am curious about my upgrade possibilities. This is my first laptop. Up until now I've been a desktop PC only guy. For the last 15 years I've been building my own PCs and for others as well. I love to change the hardware and upgrade a lot. Laptops, traditionally, haven't been good for that. So naturally I want to know what I can do to this one to tweak it. :)

First, I have heard that this laptop will support RAID 0 and 1 and that the option to enable RAID in the BIOS will only show up when you have two drives connected and until then it will only show AHCI and IDE options. Is this correct? If so I am considering two SSDs in RAID 0.

Second, I have noticed room for a half size mini PCIe card. What would be the best use for that slot? Would Intel Turbo Cache make any difference at all? Or would a mini PCIe SSD still fit in there?

Last, I wondered if I could upgrade my WiFi from the Intel 5100 to the 5300 or 5350. I am guessing that would be a no due to lack of antennas but I would like confirmation on that as well as any other possibilities regarding wireless upgrades.

Thanks in advance and pardon my long-winded question.

Edit: Oh and one more thing. Can anyone recommend a good car port adapter for this laptop?

What does that Ten Characters reply mean?

Anyway, I don't need a whole lot of space. I plan on 2x OCZ Vertex 60s for 120GBs of RAID 0 goodness. That's enough capacity for me. Two of those should equal far less heat, noise and won't be as hard on the battery as two mechanical drives. I am aware I am choosing performance over capacity and as a system builder I am totally aware of the cost. ;)

The TV tuner sounds like an interesting idea.

The point of this post was me examining my options. Thanks for the reply.

Your post has to be at least 10 characters long.

I think that you are better off doing what Johnny said regarding the hard drive. It would still yield good performance, and be more cost effective.

I am confused. My post was more than 10 characters. :p

I had thought of that configuration. I plan to play Lord of The Rings Online while away from home I want the fastest possible load times but as I sit here and think about it, you both have a point. A single Vertex 60GB should load it beautifully. Why sell myself short on space? I will definitely consider it. Thanks.

Your's was, but he had to write "10 characters" in order for his to be. Try posting something less then 10 characters like "No" and see what happens.
