Alright, so earlier this year I had to wipe my laptop because my OS was corrupt. I reinstalled all the drivers on the support page of Gateway and everything is working fine, except one thing. My native resolution on my laptop used to be 1920 x 1200, and now it's only a mere 1440 x 900. My computer now registers my monitor as a "Generic PnP monitor" and is not taking full advantage of the hardware's potential.

If any one could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Yes. I sent it in through Best Buy, after it would boot to black screen (corrupt OS), and they replaced the screen along with some other minor things. So, the only thing I could think of is maybe they replaced this screen with some pos monitor, however, they look identical.

Ah... i would try to install a few different drivers to make sure, but if none of them can reach 1920x1200... then yeah you have been screen swapped. I would go back to BB and make them right their screw up.

Hi there. You ran into a problem, where Best Buy has silently decided to screw its customers by changing the screen to the cheaper 1440x900 screen to reduce costs. Originally, the Best Buy version of the 78xx-FX model had a 1920x1200 screen. This ran for a few months. Then, Best Buy decided to drop it down to a 1440x900, without changing the model number or notifying customers at all. At the Best Buy near me, they have one of the older models on display, which has 1920x1200 resolution. The floor staff knew nothing about the screen change. They were convinced if I bought it, it would have WUXGA resolution. So I did. I took it out at the store and proved them wrong. They updated the drivers. No luck. They opened another one for me. No luck.

If you originally bought that from Best Buy, you got one of the early ones, which had the WUXGA screen. Best Buy no longer deals in those screens, so if you had them replace it, they will use their 1440x900 screens.

DRIVER UPDATE WILL NOT AFFECT NATIVE RESOLUTION.

The operating system gets the available resolutions directly from the monitor's plug and play response. These have nothing to do whatsoever with the display adapter's driver. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. Hook that thing up to an external 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 or better screen, without changing the display driver, and I guarantee it will display just fine.

Essentially, you got screwed. Your choices are: take them to small claims court and have them pay the cost of a 7808u, the current equivalent model from non-Best Buy vendors, Tiger Direct or NewEgg. Or claim any amount up to $5000 in most states to cover your costs and hassle.

Alternately, or in the meantime, buy yourself a replacement screen and install it yourself, or have a local techie do it for you. I recommend www.screencountry.com. They are the only supplier I have found that has a comprehensive list of screens with the manufacturer part numbers searchable.

There's the link to the screen you want. Good luck. Sorry to see you got screwed by that unethical move on Best Buy's part.
