hey all, bit of a lurker here for a while and it seems that now that I am in a dilemma I need an account to seek out some help.

I have a Gateway P-6860FX, and I'm looking to upgrade my processor. I'm currently running a T-5550 The obvious answer is the T9600. However, I was hearing that the P6XXX model motherboards cannot step down the FSB to 800mhz. Can anyone verify or disprove this?

I'm really hoping it can...I'm looking for my mobo model...can't seem to find it. I'll keep looking if it will yield an answer.

The P6860FX's mobo is armed with a PM965 chipset. You cannot upgrade to any 1066Mhz FSB processor and that also inclues the T9600 you mentioned and the P series processors.

The best processors you can upgrade to are the T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500 and the X9000.

There are users who have the X7800 and X7900 merom processors installed on this machine and runs well and fine, and can be OC'ed to 3.0Ghz. But these are older processors and may run a little warmer due to their manufacturing process and higher TDP but slightly cheaper than the X9000. But still, you can also choose them as your upgrade path, your wish. :)

Anyway with the X9000 you can Overclock it to 3.0GHz, but if you really want best bang per buck the T9300 is the best recommended option of all. It runs cool, and fast enough for everyday usage and general gaming.

For best performance, the X9000. For the wallet, the T9300.

    Hope this helps.

T9600 cannot work as ur have PM965 chipset which supports 800MHz FSB processors.. IMO , T9300 or T9500 would do depending on which one u can get cheaper.. but T9500 will be a bit better.

Unless you plan to run processor intensive tasks frequently, I don't know may you do, the better CPU will make little difference. I can't tell much a difference a difference between the P8600 and the T7400 on my R60 or the T2300 I'm working on for general usage. A faster hard drive or SSD is probably money better spent. Good Luck.
