    hello all!

new here, love the site, lots of good reading! I have a 2007 Gateway FX gaming laptop model P6831 FX. I have sentimental attachtment to it as it went to Iraq with me. I'd like to swap theP 6831 motherboard with a P 7805 board. The two are identical in everyway that matters, with some stuff moved around slightly "inside", but nothing that would stop a ribbon from being long enough to hook up.

Why? because when last i plugged in the charger, it burned the board where the jack connects to it. 7 years is great for this PC, but i'm not ready to let it go.

    Thanks in advance

**Edit- Id also like to say that this computer lasted 7 years exactly. Its been a *winner*. Now I took care of it and maintained it well, but still 7 years is awesome for any laptop, ESPECIALLY one that has been on deployments to the sandbox. with regards to using the 7805 board, From what i have read, it looks like there may be a problem with the power button working right, but im confident i can make it work and look stock. I have the option to buy a refurbished p- 7805 board, and since it comes without a CPU, i'd like to try the x9100 NOTE, will i have to chage the power jack? Im thinking i will put a new one in it anyway since thats where the problem started (burned the MB at the jack) thanks again guys.

The issue with the P7805 or P79xx main boards is the media bar is different. I think someone who did this had an issue with the power button actually being able to turn it on. Now this is a stretch of memory here so I may be off.

Also it has been a while but I think all of the P series used a power daughter board that includes the usb port USB port.

Actually from #13 below original post

Or you can always use eBay and find another matching P6831 board and just replace the board. That would also be the quicker route to go. Those boards can be expensive or not depending if you can find the P7805 board and even then like another poster said you will have to do some research and work to get it to work.

Beware if you purchase just any main board the daughter power board may not be included and this is what you need.

Edit; the x9100 will work either in the P78 or P79. The issue is you can no longer get the E stepping but the C one. With this added heat stress you may need to find a new HS that can handle it as the one you have is not only old but most likely not the better one.
