I'm trying to maximize my laptop buying dollar for the best 17" LCD gaming experience possible....for roughly $1600 or under (after rebates/instant discounts/whatever). $2K+ is out of my desired range ATM.
I've found a few candidates from a surprising wide array of manufacturers. What is screwing up my decision making process is the videocard (discrete GPU w/it's own memory). I know that NEWER does not necessarily mean BETTER.
Is the 8600M GS 256MB better than the 7600 256MB? Is there a chart that shows this? I know the 8600 is DX10 compatible; aside from that is it a BETTER discrete GPU solution?
Thanks much.
ps
I'm not limited to a NVidia GPU solution. If you know of an ATI solution that is comparable to either the 8600M or the 7600 please LMK.
Thanks.![]()

Go to gpureview.com, select compare cards and then choose those 2 gpus from the drop down menus. Then you can see exaclty what each offers side by side in terms of specs.
But just in words, then 8600 is a better card, but the difference is not big. -
well, the ATI x2600 is supposed to be on par or better than the 8600GT so keep an eye out for those offerings.
and it depends which 8600M you're talking about
the gs or the gt version. -
I should have specified, sorry; I'm speaking of the GS version. Thanks guys.
ps
Nice link, Adinu. -
hmmm....well...i'm not sure why an 8600gs would be in a 17" notebook
in the 17" department, look at the Toshiba x205, it has an 8700GT and that's has much better performance than the 8600GT and GS....but it's going to cost you.
for a 17" gaming laptop...i'd say look at what dell has to offer...you should be able to find an 8600GT in one of their 17" offerings.
The Dell Precision M90 might give you what you need. -
8600m GS is better than 7600, but as said you should be able to get a 17" w/8600m GT in your price range.
GeForce Go 7600 256MB vs. GeForce 8600M 256MB - is one considerably better than the other?
