I have a z81sp that uses a desktop P4. The P4 is the same socket type as the desktop Core 2's, but I can't upgrade to the core 2 because the z81sp bios only supports 5xx and 6xx series P4's.

Why don't companies like asus offer bios updates that would allow us to upgrade our cpus without buying a new computer? Is it so that they can milk more money out of consumers? Would there be any way for me to obtain a modded bios to allow me to accept a core 2?

Its normally not just so simple. The Core 2 processors require a sutible chipset, like the Intel 965 or 975. So, for those notebooks, which I no none off, which contain these processors, then it is possible. However, for almost all of the Pentium 4 noteboos old, like yours, which used different chipsets like the Intel 915, they are not compatible.

No, because unless u also figure out a way to flash the chipset to a newer version (like zero mentioned) your computer will not accept a core 2 duo. Oh and btw, don't try to search for "flashing chipset" cuz it's not possible.
