I can only undervolt my Sager laptop with the 9750h to 125mv. I actually haven't tried in between, but I know 150mv crashes. But when I run Modern Warfare it gets to 85c, and I have a laptop cooling pad. I know 100 is the max temp, but what are regular/good operating temps for this chip? Thanks.

Thats the usual temperature.
Repasting might get it running in the 80ºC ball park.jotm likes this. -
If it stays under 90 degrees Celcius, it's all good. Been the same since Core 2.
If you ask HP, Dell, and Apple, the operating temperature is 98 degrees

the intel extreme utility tool shows the "package" maxed at 81 while i was gaming for an hour. but hwinfo shows "package" as maxing out at 87c during the same time.
which one should i trust? -
To me always “safe” operating temp is under 80C, Optimal under 70C, danger zone over 80C

That’s funny. I developed my paradigm around PlayStation 3 temperatures so I leaned to always keep temperature below 70 because above can cause flexing or die degradation and 80 for sure kills them with major board flexing and damage to GPU die. With laptops it’s even more dangerous due to battery living inside the same housing and they are very sensitive to heat. It’s not coincidence all these “ultra books” have developed puffy batteries after a couple years of usage

This is todays gamingbooks. Designed as Ticking bombs. My laptops haven't this problem. Neither my Alienware 17 from 2013.

Yes because Dell makes the batteries and no other company has had expanding battery issues...

That's crazy. I've had numerous HP issues but not that.

i haven't heard of anyone with a gaming laptop i7 9750 run consistently under 80c at load...i don't know how that's possible. i got the upgrade on paste, although i forget which one it is. after a couple of hours i'm in the 78-83 area, but there are spikes as high as 88 although they are brief. not really sure what to think about it

What you can think of it is: Status quo.
Not good, but that's 2020 technology. Crap.0lok and tilleroftheearth like this. -
Processors will last 10+ years easily running at 80-90 degrees 3-5 hours a day, so that's how manufacturers design their machines.
Many other components can and will fail before the CPU, their idea is that people will just buy a new one after 3-4 years.
It's been like this for pretty much everything, for the past few decades.MaxIT likes this. -
that's for a desktop CPU, not an i7 into a notebook.
Temperatures above 80/85º C while gaming are perfectly safe in a laptop.
That's normal for that CPU.
I tried several notebooks, Dell, MSI, Asus or Razer , and temperatures in the 85º while gaming (with some spikes even above 90/95º) are absolutely normal.
Generally safe temp for i7 9750h (laptop)
