    Getting I7-4940MX temps under control

    So I got myself a shiny new 4940MX, it's not overclocked or anything just yet but I noticed that the CPU runs insanely hot. LM is on its way but takes a little bit until it arrives. I'm not doing much but temps of 50c on idle and 98c on load is a bit to toasty for my taste. I know that you can probably do something about it by undervolting it, but I wanted to ask experienced users with this CPU what settings they have it running on so I can get an idea what values to look at and which direction to go.

    I also noticed that the temps jump really fast and once the temps reach around 90s my fan does go full speed and push out the air, BUT, the air is really just lukewarm, when comparing it to my GPU under 40% load and 50s degrees, it's the same temperature, once my GPU goes on 70c I cannot put my hand behind the exhaust, since it would be to warm, but 98c on the CPU exhaust no problem, so I'm pretty sure LM will fix this problem

    Also I think my heatsink is way to tight. When I put thermal compound on it and screw it in, the entire thermal compound is pushed away, there is almost nothing left on the CPU. I think I might have a mismatched heatsink unit.

    EDIT: Just applied new thermal compound, and screwed the heatsink slowly onto the CPU and only screwed it in around 3/4 of the lenght of the screws, temps dropped down to 92c on max, and it takes a while until the CPU temps get there, so that mystery is now solved. Gonna buy a new CPU Heatsink since mine is a copper plate, with copper heatpipes and aluminium fins, which is meh. Want a full copper one for better heat absorbtion once the LM arrives.

    EDIT2:
    Going for -125mv helped getting the temperatures better in check, still far from optimal. I've noticed that the heatsink simply doesn't work. When the CPU is at 92c and my fan go beserk, I can hold my hand on the exhaust without any problems, if i'd do the same on the GPU on 75c temp it gets way to hot for my hand to stay there. So my high temperatures are a problem caused by the heatsink, it doesn't conduct the heat properly.

    Good news, enjoy your 4940x,
    but still you can improve the temp to be within 80's, thermal compound and the heatsink are not everything, still you have to check the voltage along with the fan/fans profile.

    That's why I asked if some with the 4940mx already know some settings I should check, I only know that I could reduce the vcore and nothing more, dno about the other settings. I want a good mix of performance and temps.

    I think the best way to achieve that is with turbo power limits. You get maximum snappiness from single/light thread (game, general stuff) use, while not burning it up if you do something 100% utilisation (bench, encode) at maximum speed.

    Your laptop will be pretty stable in terms of what temperature it can maintain say a 65W CPU power (at a fixed fan speed) so its fairly simple to test how high you want to go in power and temps.

    Your thermal paste/heatsink fit sounds a bit weird... what application are you doing? Ideally you want almost no visible paste left on the die since that means very closely mated surfaces and a very small gap for the paste to fill. Is it misaligned? Last thing you want is to crack the die from uneven pressure on one corner or edge.

    I think the heatsink is just to tight, as I said, when i didnt tighten the screws but just stopped screwing the moment i could feel the slightest resistance i'd stop screwing, since I did that the temps dropped considerably and it would take much longer for the temps to get high.

    When I'd tighten the screws it would push out the entire paste and it's as if I'd have no thermal compound left, when trying to benchmark it would shoot up to 98c after only 5 seconds of benchmarking. I tried to remove the entire thermal compound and just screw it together to see how the temps would be and no suprise, same as if i'd put thermal compound on it, 98c after 5 seconds etc. I'd say it has to be an issue with the heatsink being to tight.

    and the compound which I'm using is Coolermaster high performance thermal compound, so it's rather good.

    About the turbo temps, so you want me to reduce to watt usage of the turbo mode? You have ivy bridge extreme CPU so you probably have some good experience with it

    What is this 4940mx installed in? Tighter is better. The fit has to be right but the less space that has to be filled in with tim the better. Lm is the best but still the haswell chips run hot. My 4930mx runs at 4.3ghz at 1.075v and stays at 83c under intense load with a full copper 4 pipe heatsink. If you have a 17r1 i recommend it.
