If its anything like the lexar 4,8,16gb ssd expresscard, it will be really slow.

I've used some of those express card drives and I think most of them are deadly slow...

It should be possible to install vista on it, but to boot from the expresscard, well I dont know if that is possible.
Go into the bios of your laptop and see what the boot options are. You can probably boot harddrive, optical, usb, ethernet. If expresscard is there, than you can boot to it.
The one problem with these expresscard ssd's is that they are really slow. They were all made about 2 yrs ago, when the ssd tech was far behind where it is now. I havent seen one company resurrect the expresscard ssd's, so i am pretty sure the drive on ebay is really slow as well.

you cannot boot from any external storage media (except esata) without modifying the windows OS, even if the options are available in your bios.
For example to boot XP off of USB you had to follow this guide:
http://www.ngine.de/article/id/8/
the problem is that the drivers for e.g. the usb ports are loaded too late.
i have actually installed a linux OS on a lexar 8gb expresscard ssd, shortly after i sent it back..... it is far too slow i'm afraid.... all expresscard ssds are. -
One of the biggest issues with nearly every SSD Expresscard out there is that they use the USB portion of the expresscard interface rather than the PCI-E 1x. Even if the components are decent the performance wont be there until someone makes one with a native PCI-E controller on it.

If your wanting a small cheap SSD i recommend finding out if your laptop have a free PCI slot and getting a PCI SSD. THey are still pretty slow, but it will stay internally in your laptop and you will probably never miss the PCI slot (espiceally if you didnt know you had an open one)
