Lets suppose I want to upgrade the ram in my notebook, but I just don't want to do it myself, totally out of the question and I want a store like BestBuy, Circuit City or CompUSA to do it.

How much would it cost and how long would it take to do it? Isn't ram upgrade the easiest upgrade on a notebook, it should only take a couple of minutes max right? I saw that the BestBuy's Geek Squad does it for $29 and Circuit City for $30

Just wondering, in case the dude upgrading my notebook messes up and damages my ram and/or notebook, what could I do about it? Is that a thing to even worry about?

Rahul, I would do it yourself. On HP's website, they have online documentation, which shows you how to access the memory. Check that out.

It is incredibly easy to upgrade the memory, I wouln't pay ten cents and have someone do it for me.

Just remember, that when upgrading yourself, don't touch the memory a lot, especially not the pins. That will reduce performance.

I'd say it would take at the most, 2 or 3 minutes to do.

I'd have to concur with ChazMan, upgrading the RAM on a notebook is incredibly easy to do. I did it with my old Compaq 5 or so years ago, so it could only have gotten easier with the new modularity that is popping up in notebooks.

One very important thing that ChazMan didn't mention was to make sure you ground yourself by touching a piece of unpainted metal before handling the RAM chip.

But yeah, it should only involve removing some screws and swapping the chips, 5 minutes max.

    Best of luck.

Okay, lets suppose I want to do it on an ultraportable, like the Vaio T series, I'm sure upgrading the ram on that will be quite more difficult.

The truth is, I fried my old Fujitsu Lifebook P5020D just by messing around with the hard drive. :(
So I guess I've been tramautized by that experience and am so afraid to even open up a notebook and poke around in it.

Do some reading online and do it yourself.

Pointless to pay money for something you can do yourself.

Unless it voids your warranty, do it yourself :D

    Cheers,
    Mike

As long as you can do this off carpet(to avoid static electricity), ground yourself, and don't touch the pins on the memory(the oils from your skin can cause minor corrosion which affects conductivity.....if you touch them by accident, just dilute some rubbing alcohol and wipe them lightly and let them dry).

i agree with everyone here, but also to your original idea if u must avoid doing it yourself the geek squad is backed by bestbuy and im sure they gurentee there work. i dont know for sure since i do my own work but when i dont have time for my buddys parents comps they have used geek with no complaints
