Is gigabit ethernet an important aspect when looking at laptops? Should I reconsider a notebook that has everything I need in it except gigabit ethernet? I will be going to college this fall and don't want to get lower internet speeds by not having gigabit ethernet. Will this even happen? What is the importance of gigabit ethernet? Does it have anything to do with internet speed? Please help ASAP. I will be making my purchase of the Dell e1705 based on this answer.

Gigabit ethernet = 1000 megabits per second.
Normal ethernet = 100 megabits per second.

If you are using WIFI, its doesnt matter what you choose, its doesnt have to do with ethernet.

Does it have to do with internet speed? Well, have you heard of internet speed going 1000 megabits per sec? I havent. Its primary uses to transfer huge files over network with fast speed.

There are quite a few replies to your gigabit question on the Dell board.
