I don't care about vivid colors and so on...
the is reflection is .....

My friend has a glossy screen that is so reflective he can kill the flash on his camera and take a picture--off the screen--of people behind him. Maybe that would be an advantage if you were a spy or something... for me it is not a pleasant idea; I'm all for matte screens.
-
I honestly don't see the point in a glossy screen. I've seen a couple of them and from my experience the nasty reflection far outweighs any benefits in colour. I don't understand why they're more expensive!
-
I love glossy!Hey Marcog my fellow southafrican

I tried a glossy on a Sony Vaio relatively recently and I thought it was horrible! Not only could I see the reflection of the window behind me in the screen, but all the finger print marks and scuffs on it. That would drive me mad!
Yay for matte -
My beloved NC8430 has a matte screen
My uni has big energy in-efficent white lights and big windows that let the sun shine on my face in the morning. My mate has a lappie with a glossy screen. He has to draw the curtains and block nature out... otherwise his laptop is nothing more than a glorified lamp
I suppose it's down to personal preference versus the enviroment (or combo of both) the laptop will be used in. Personally, I will try to get a matte screen as long as they still make them. I know I just could not live with glare -
It is hard to find a non-glossy screen these days I find, but frankly I wouldn't want to. The glossy screen really improves contrast and colours immensely, and frankly the only time the reflectiveness is noticeable is when the screen is fairly dark, and even then only when you stop and actually think about it. Besides, for most usage the screen will be light (e.g. excel, word, etc), and the reflectiveness is not noticeable. However it certainly is a matter of opinion, and certain people will not like it for sure.
-
My Aspire 3000 has a glossy screen, and it looks nice with the Windows XP MCE Style and the new Plastik/Keramik styles in Kubuntu.
Since my laptop almost never leaves my desk, glare is not much of a problem. -
It depends where you place the screen if you like glossy or matte. The glossy will give you a clearer image but if you have any light shined into the screen, it is just like a mirror so dark or low light surroundings are best for glossy. Matte will give you a less clearer image than the glossy but you can use matte in any surroundings.
-
Did I mention games look much much better on a glossy screen?
-
Gaming looks better on a glossy screen as long as you don't have light shining into the screen while playing. You won't be able to see anything on the screen
-
Well yes, if you want to pull a Peter Gibbons stunt like in Office Space and start playing games at work, the glare from the florescent bulbs would definitely hurt.
-
In my opinion matte is better. Sure you still get a washed out look on the screen if direct light is shining onto it, but with glossy, reflections are much more noticeable, especially when you are in a sun-lit room. This annoys me greatly on my current laptop so I've made a point of making sure my next laptop has matte. Although having said that, this glossy surely does look good in the dark!
What it comes down to for me is that any colour improvement caused by the glossy screen is cancelled out and then some by the annoying glare. After all, if the whole screen is washed out from light, the "improved contrast" doesn't mean anything! -
I have been using my girl friend's Toshiba with a glossy screen to do word processing work. It gives me a headache.
-
For me I slightly prefer matte but its no deal breaker if its glossy. I find I can look at a matte screen for longer periods than glossy.
The only real annoyance I find with glossy is that solid areas of black, or very dark colours gives me a perfect reflection. -
When I got my glossy screen it was very difficult to read on it (I was used to matte), but after a week, my brain just stopped putting attention to the reflection, and now I read as good as in matte, and even better, since the letters kind of look sharper in glossy.
That first week I asked a friend whose first laptop had glossy, and he said that he never realized the reflexion, until I told him. So I guess it's just about getting used to it.
So you can get used to read in glossy as good as in matte, and glossy is more vivid for pictures, movies and games. I heard thought that for color precision respect to your printer is not that good, so not good for designers. -
This must the be 101st poll on the subject. That didn't stop me from choosing glossy.
-
funny thread in a way...ironic funny because in the early days of laptops they had glssy displays but people rejected them like my feet reject topsider's.
I cannot live with a glossy display as they cause just too much eyestrain if you are working with it all day every day. -
no complains from this glossy hp screen
-
Well, I'd say that none of them are better. It's all of matter of what you'd rather have, let's say in a Matte screen over Glossy. No glare and less dust over higher contrast and more vibrant colours. I prefer Matte screens though. I use my notebook outside.
-
although most laptops are glossy but lcds in desktops are mainly matte.
if you looking for glossy and less reflective than others I recommend fujitsu crystal view. most of the time laptop is using at home since its a 15.4" and I rarely get reflective but it still have little as long as its glossy.
put a movie or a nice picture in a glossy vs matte screen, see the difference and that may help you make up your mind.
edit: my fujitsu laptop is always dirty and never noticed it, only way for me to know if its clean is to turn the lcd off. -
i have a glossy LCD and i love it...the only negative is that it reflects a lot of light, and/or anything else behind it--kinda like a mirror.
-
I dont undertsand it use to cost more to get a glossy screen now it cost more to get a matte screen now for people that own a asus z96j is it worth paying the extra 150$s to get the matte screen is the screen that bad on these models glossy?
-
yup...if you are actually using your laptop under a variety of lighting conditions, you know actually taking it around with you. Then I suspect most will admit the glossy display is a big detractor. Some won't simply because they refuse to cop to it or aren't really using the thing all day long for actual work. EVERYTHING behind you will show up if your screen is using darker colors OR if the pitems behind you are brighter then the screen itself. I used one fore about 3-days and took it back because of the mirror like refection issue
Something I did notice though was they have some very high quality "screen protector" sheets that can be purchased with an anti-glare/reflection matte finish that seem really nice from what has been posted here and there. So that would let a person have the best of both worlds as the overlay is easily removeable. Somewhere here is a thread about them too, notthe privacy thread but one specifically about overlays/protectors.
Anyway that is a possible solution. -
humm ill have to check that out ty much if any of you have a link to a place that has them plz post it!
-
oh darn....I just knew you were gonna ask...
Lemme see what I can find...I dint save the link but should be able to sleuth on out...biab...

Bees:
I could only track down info on Exim but there was another mentioned somewhere on this site that specifically offered a glossy and matte finish laptop lcd protector film. I can't find it and it might even be in this thread for all I know...but here is some of what I found:

If I find it I'll check back to see if anyone else found it already otherwise I'll post what I gfind...oops...dins is burning...real falmes...gotta go... -
I have a viewsonic 19" lcd 1440x900 monitor. I think it is a matte screen. Are notebook matte screen's quality comparable to desktop lcd's? My sis has a glossy screen on her toshiba, but haven't played with a matte lcd notebook, so I have nothing to use as comparison.

I received my Vista Inspiron 6400 yesterday, replete with TrueLife screen. I was unsure which way to go beforehand. I will be watching a lot of DVD's on my laptop, so glossy appealed, but all the glare horror stories scared me a touch. In the end, I just decided to go with TrueLife, and take a chance....and am I glad I did! The glare 'problem' is nowhere near as big as people say it is, same goes for reflections, even with a strong light source overhead (although I concede I don't use the thing outdoors, but still). I could never go back to matte now. Simple as that. Glossy rules!
-
I am for matte all the way, I have used both but I much rather have matte.
-
I like glossy more. Pictures and games display nicer on glossy screens.
-
glossy.............
-
Nothing but matte for me, especially in a laptop.
-
I understand why some people might like the illusion of higher contrast, but one of the main reasons I like LCD monitors over CRTs is the lack of reflections.
-
Glossy is great for multimedia tasks. It makes the multimedia stuffs vivid and eye catching, if you know what i mean.

Just got the 3M privacy screen and problem solved.
I feel like I have 2 screens in one now. Inside is beautiful with glossy but outside needs the screen to remove the mirror effect. -
Also - after I ordered the 3M screen... I figured out how to adjust brightness and with the brightness up, it really fixes alot of the glossy problems. It's beautiful.
Matte is going out like the betamax ! -
Tell us more about the 3M privacy film. Does it stick to the screen causing air bubbles? Easily removable?
Thanks -
okay, first let me say sometimes mistakes are how things get invented so be easy on me.
I put the 3M screen on and it makes the screen darker but adjusting the brightness fixed that.
It was totally removing the mirror effect.
Then I started to notice patches , not air bubbles, but patches where the 3M screen was sticking to the monitor.
I lifted it off and replaced it but after awhile, the patches reappear.
Now someone came over and informed me 1st - that I'm an idiot and 2nd - that the screen is on backwards.
So I flipped it over and no more sticking or patches but now it does absolutely nothing to reduce the mirror effect.
It does works great as a privacy screen as it's advertised for.
Sorry for jumping the gun on previous post.
PS It is very simple to install - comes with clear plastic strips about 1/4" wide by
4" high. Only 1/8" of width is sticky - you stick them to sides of monitor at bottom with other 1/8" over monitor. Another small sticky piece goes on the bottom - these are all clear . The 3M screen slides in and out easily. No need to remove it - laptop closes with it on . You wouldn't notice it if I didn't point it out. -
Matte for me. saw my friends cursing their screens coz of the glare and reflection. I did not want that to happen. So I got myself a ThinkPad Z61t.

I thought glossy screens were more popular by 2:1. I was wrong.
-
Glossy laptops generally don't mix well with florescent lights.
-
I've been looking in the stores lately and it seems to me that almost the only laptop screens to be available are glossy. Even the matte screens that are there show considerable gloss/reflection. Of those I've seen the matte screens were on the older models.
I have experimented with the screens in the stores and found that by angling the screen I could cause the reflections to reflect up instead of into my eyes. The wider viewing area of the new glossy screens allow the screen to be angled enough to clear the reflections yet allow good clear and bright viewing. -
I'd rather stab my eyes with a fork than to subject them to a glossy screen.
-
OK! if that's your choice.
-
glossy or matte?
it's all about use and preference
matte is good for out door use and for those who can't stand glare.
glossy tend to provide clearer pictures for photo editing and gaming
note: all statements made prior are my opinions and nothing more. take them as you see fit. -
It's a shame Dell doesn't offer top of the line matte screens for the E1705 .they also would make more money, as those who hate glossy would go for the cheaper lower rez screen..

True, i noticed dell screens arent that good. expecialy looking at them from an angle.
i just got the ASUS z96js with a glossy screen. wow, you can look at it from different angles and its still sharp and bright.its an SXGA btw.
picture quality is really good on a glossy screen. during day light or outdoors i had no problem using the z96js. it was bright enough. its just gona bother if something behind you is really bright, coz it reflects on the screen right into your eyes. otherwise the glossy screen on the z96js is really great.
