Hey people, I'm moving from a Macbook with an C2D T7200 to a Studio XPS with a P8600 and I was wondering what sort of boost in performance I should see in something like H.264 encoding?

Here's the specs of the two processors. As far as I can tell, the P8600 is better in everything except it has 1MB less L2 cache.

    T7200
    2.0GHz
    667MHz FSB
    65nm
    L2: 4 MB
    MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, x86-64

    P8600
    2.4GHz
    1066MHz FSB
    45nm
    L2: 3 MB
    MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, x86-64

The Merom 4M processors, like the T7200 share the same core architecture as the newer series processors. So performance per MHz is exactly the same. The FSB difference really does not make any difference, so all that should be looked at is clock speed.
Going from 2.0Ghz to 2.4Ghz is not going to show much of a performance increase at all. It may reduce rendering times in cpu intensive applications, but under everyday computation they will be very similar in performance to one another.

Wow, I'm surprised. I'd have thought the big FSB jump would have had a big impact.

Ah well, I'm sure the 9500M and 4GB RAM in the SXPS will kick my Macbook's GMA 950 and 2GB RAM's :-D

Without a doubt the new system will be faster. The performance may be inhibited on your macbook pro, since their was some kind of core emulation needed for the processor to be recognized by the platform. I would say the new system will feel faster, and render maybe 30% faster.
