I am looking to buy an x9100 for my m17 and the general consensus seems to be to purchase them on ebay. I am not an ebay user, nor am I really familar with what the x9100 should look like. Can anyone lend advice if these vendors and products are legit? They both have great feedback ratings, which gives some comfort.
The first one ships from China:

There is also this one which is located in North America for a bit more:

Can anyone lend advice?

No, X9100 is outdated. Never buy that one...
Instead go with the T9900 whose OEM version is already available. The prices of both are very similar, the performances of both are exactly the same (3.06GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB). However T9900 consumes ~10Watts less. (T9900: 35Watts, X9100: 44Watts)

+ his laptop is not a dell m1730 but an Alienware m17.

I want the x9100 due to the unlocked multiplier and traditionally higher ceiling for overclocking. I don't plan on overclocking huge, but I do like to tinker, which is why I chose the x9100 over the T9900. Does that seem like a bad choice?

I would purchase t9900 for sure. X9100 is a waste of money (for me).

Realize two things:
1)The x9100 is going for roughly the same cost at the t9900. So I wouldnt be saving myself any money.
2)Lots of whitebook owners have overclocking either via bios or SetFSB to great results.
Really appreciate the feedback though, and if in the end I don't end up overclocking at all it still ends up being the same price. There is the 44watt vs 35watt issue sure, but how damaging is that really? -

If you're going to OC (which I would since your laptop is made for OC), i would go with the x9100 since it supports bios overclocking, which the t9900 does not. If your not going to OC, then get the t9900 for lower wattage.

I went from an X9100 to a T9900 at some point and it ran about 10c cooler. Also there is a nice feature where when only one core is used by an application, the CPU runs at 3.2GHz. But yeah I guess if you can overclock via mulipliers, go with the X9100.

Thanks,

i say get the x9100, the whitebook can handle the heat, and you can get a few hundred more mhz out of it. i assume you don't care about battery life?
-
No it's not a big concern. I have a different notebook for that purpose. The only concern I would have is heat but research have shown it to be a non issue.
-
His laptop is perfectly suited to overclocking a X9100.
I have the same rig and the X9100 is very happy at 3.57ghz without any heat issues at all. -
I have never used an Alienware and I have no familiarity with its models. If it is suitable for OC than no problem with X9100...

well actually they locked the bios to avoid people to overclock. but we can always flash the bios to the ocz whitebook one.
it overclocks very well. I'm very impressed. x9100 ftw
Good Place To Buy X9100?
