Hi - I'm looking to get a decent USB 3.0 1TB or 2TB portable hard drive, preferably with a (black) metal casing, and a 7200rpm drive, though a fast 5400 rpm drive would suffice.

Most of the drives I've see have plastic cases, or there any decent black ones with a metal case? I'm based in the UK, if it makes any difference. Thanks!

    Nice, but not black...

BTW I don't care about any of the bundled backup software some drives come with, as it's usually rubbish and/or bloatware compared to standalone backup software

The Toshiba Alu drive looks pretty good (and comes in black and you can get a 2TB version), does anyone know what the performance is like for this drive?

Where did you find the 2TB version? I have been searching it for ages.

I use the NexStar CX case, which is aluminum and black. Then you can buy whichever 2.5" hard drive you like to put in it, and it's nice and easy to secure with screws that it includes. I owned the previous USB 2.0 model as well, and have been happy with them.

Oxford_Guy, I also suggest you getting a good case fully meeting your criteria, and a bare drive of your choice (or an external 2TB M9T, which is easily extractable SATA drive).

Thanks, I might do that. BTW what do you mean by the Samsung M9T being "easily extractable"?

Oxford_Guy, last time I checked, it was the only 2.5" 9.5mm 2TB drive, sold much cheaper in external enclosure rather than as a bare drive. M9T's topic.

Oh, okay - which external enclosures have this then?

EDIT: Oh - I see it now - Seagate Backup Plus 2TB Slim - could it easily be removed from the plastic enclosure and put in a metal one?
