What are some good external speakers that I could use with my laptop? I looked at the V10 but from customer reviews, it has no bass. I don't plan on moving it too much but don't want to have to deal with a big subwoofer box. Thanks for any inputs.

Logitech z-2300 are great.

The Klipsch Ultra 2.0 and Edirol MA-8D would be my suggestions.

I 2nd the Logitech Z-2300 speakers

The Logitech X-230 speakers are similar to the the Z-2300s but the sub is smaller, they are less powerful, and they are only $35 or so. They get really loud if you want them to and I think they sound great.

hmmmm....this is actually a hard decision haha

bose has 3 different systems out and they all sound amazing. i would look into those if you want a top quality sound

Bose is a four letter word. Decent construction but the sound is a long way from what is considered High Fidelity. Great marketing and lots of hype for very little performance at extremely high prices.

The logitechs shake my house when I crank them up. Movies and gaming are amazing on them though if you are more oriented towards music Klipsch might be the better choice though because I am not a hardcoure audiophile music still sounds great to me on my 2300s.

Look for an amp that has a S/PDIF input and a USB sound card with S/PDIF output if your laptop does not have S/PDIF. Make sure the amp uses digital technology to amplify for high efficiency. Then buy the speakers separately.

I just got the opportunity to listen to a set of Acoustic Energy's Aego M-Series speakers. It's a 2.1 system with solid metal satellite speakers and a smallish (but very effective) subwoofer. Would be fantastic for a college student or small home office.
They're a terrific value for the money at less than $200. I'd say they're an even better value than the NHT M00's (my all-time favorite computer speakers, which cost $500 for the 2.0 setup or $1000 for the 2.1 setup). They don't have the same level of definition as the M00's, but for the price point, they're unbeatable, and vastly better than the cheapo plastic Logitech, Klipsch, and other big-box store computer speakers.
On their web page, they show a Sony PSP hooked up to them. I've never tried that, but I imagine the results would be fantastic - a great alternative use for these.
Here's the product page, they're a UK company although their products are available at retailers in the US:

Get the Gigaworks T20, best multimedia speakers Ive heard for music (most balanced sound). Ive had most of the Megaworks, Gigaworks, Promedia etc.. and even the rare Videologic Crossfires back in the days. If you want bass though I would go with the Logitechs like the already mentioned Z-2300.

Lupin, I'm glad you tried out those Aego M's, I've been thinking of getting them for my parents along with the iMac for christmas.

You know, after going to check them out yesterday, I'm actually having my doubts. The screen on the 20" iMac really, really sucks. The viewing angles are abysmal, and the glossy screen just makes it worse. I could splurge and get them the 24", but then I'd probably not be able to get them the printer and speakers I'm wanting to. So I'm starting to think a Mini with a 20" Cinema Display might be the best option, even though I'd prefer they get the 3.5" hard drive and dedicated graphics. I think I'll check them out again when I'm in Chicago in a couple weeks, I'm staying a mile away from the Michigan Ave store.
Good external speakers?
