I have a quick question about USB HDD enclosure. Do I need individual power for today's typical 2.5" HDD or they can all use bus power ?

My very old 10G model has no problem but not sure if the newer models need extra power as my understanding of USB bus power is only 0.5A max.

In my experience, although the newer HDDs generally draw a little less power, the need for external power depends on the enclosure as well as the HDD. Some of the enclosures come with a power cable to connect to a second USB port so you don't need an external PSU. Good USB ports should be self-limiting on power but there are reports of the ports dying after a power overload.

Tom's Hardware 2.5" HDD charts show maximum power consumption and Table 2 of this Digit Life review also has power measurements for a range of 2.5" HDDs.

thanks, we puzzle me is that some HDD spec said it can have a max draw of over(or close to) 1A which unless as you said the enclosure use extra USB port or else it can't even meet the need.

It seems that many of the newer HDD use less power when in active use but the spin up seem to require more.
