Would like to upgrade the processor in my ASUS V6J. Wondering if any places out there are selling the new core 2?

    NCIX.com has them.

It's a reputable Canadian store. I buy from them all the time so you can definitely rely on them. They do ship to the States.

They are quit expensive right now, I would suggest you do the upgrade in October when MEROM becomes widely available for retail and cheaper.

The biggest improvement over Yonah is 64 bit capabilities, which is not something you may want to get in a hurry right now. (Vista 64 is not out yet, so why are you in a hurry to upgrade your processor?)

they have the desktop version, not the notebook version. I don't even think the notebook version is out yet.

The desktop version is different, right. You cannot get the laptop version right now. There's an embargo on them until a certain date.

Also be aware that the Merom chips, although more faster and with the 64 bit capability do draw more power than the current yonah chips, even while clocked down.

I'm not sure the differences between the desktop and laptop versions. However, I was under the impression that the Core2Duo is a re-designed Core Duo. Aside from being 64bit I thought it was more efficient-thus-more power friendly.

I know the desktop version is a huge improvement over Pentium D, and even EE. I don't think the 2 will draw much, if any, more power than the duo. It would be like going backwards in terms of efficiency.

P.S. Merom is not due for release till later this month.

A much anticipated, next generation Intel dual core processor built on an improved 64 bit architecture, twice the cache, lower power consumption, and I have had it two months before it's released? :D Read my signature! :D

yeah so you got one customized. so what. most knew of that option. many didnt' do it as they will just get the merom processor later when it will actually be of some use and put it in themselves or pay shop to do it with all the money they saved by not getting a customized upgraded by merchant machine and waiting to get a c2d

Newegg has the 1.83Ghz and 2.33Ghz Merom-based chips...but you're gonna pay for them, certainly. I am going to upgrade mine when Santa Rosa gets close / comes out and the prices drop a tad.

NCIX is a scary place... so disorganized. I was searching for nc6400 and nc8430 and I got a bunch of inaccurate information such as 1 yr warranty. I know the warranty is 3 years...as all business class notebooks have it. Also they take weeks to reply emails and the forum is filled with immature kids with inaccurate information.

yea I'll prob wait until a full and 64 bit release of win vista is out and even then its not totally worth it if there isn't any 64 bit programs/apps. but yeah by then prices should come down.

they aren't horrible now but yeah.

its annoying though how most of the commercial laptops in chain stores with core 2 all have the t5xxx with teh 2mb cache instead of the t7xxx with the 4mb cache.

I like the Sony Vaio FE series 15.4" but it only comes with a t5600. I mostly just like the white keyboard with black screen 2 tone look. I kind of started realizing i liked that model after i already got my asus v6j and especially after realizing it was significantly cheaper which for sony to be cheaper then anything is rare.

its just asus is so expensive and even the v6j being slee thin nad light with nice looks is somewhat of an understated business model that most wont know what it is or appreciate and think its an acer or something while the sony vaio will get more respect from the avg person. i dont care about that much if it wasn't that it was also considerably less and already has the core 2 albeit 2mb cache version. if i find out the sony vaio fe series i like has a better vid card then teh asus v6j, i might be really tempted to return for one.

its hard to justify paying more for less. One thing i will admit i noticed is that the sony feels cheaper and plasticky. The build quality of the asus seems to be unmatched. i just dont know if that is worth 600 more then then comparibly equipped sony vaio i like.

other thing i could do is get the smaller 13" sz series i think sony vaio model the chain stores have and take its t7200 cpu and switch it with teh the t5600 in the 15.4" model i like and then return the smaller one, heh. might need shop to do that though and they'd be like hm. i dunno.

prob should just keep the v6j as i do like the 15.1" square screen as all the ones in chain store seem to be wide screen and the 15.4" wide screens seem smaller then the 15.1" square. i knew that was true of wide screen but thought the extra .3 inche made up for that but not quite enough.

also at first i was not blown away by the v6j screen as i thought i would be if not somewhat disappointed. i guess i was used to and favored glossy screens which the v6j is not but it was never described as matte either and i got the impression from reviews and discussion that it is somewhat in between but it is def more mattte then glossy and i think i prefer glossy.

like i said though its a rare screen size and a brand you can't get in chain stores and a good special model in the v6j. though higher then the sony and others i got a good price compared to what the v6j usually goes for so i should prob keep it

not having core 2 shouldn't be a concern right now though as i said and i know its a model that you can upgrade to merom as there are merchants that sell it with the option to customize/upgrade to one but i felt like that was a rip
