My cousin is in need of a new hard drive for her old Toshiba Portege 2000 and doesn't want a Toshiba Hard Drive (which are known to be slow from what I see around here). Do you guys know any better reliable brands that make these types of HDs and where they can be bought? I searched newegg and they don't seem to sell them.

Actually in the 1.8" arena Toshiba is ahead of the curve for the most part, they make among other things to my knowledge the only 5400rpm 1.8" drive available (unfortunately its SATA only) but they also make the highest density PATA drive available at 240GB (which is freakin amazing). Their drives use PMR for increased data density (and thus speed).

That's their newest stuff. Hitatchi used to make some decent stuff but looking at their website (hitatchigst.com) i don't see any 1.8s anymore, the C4k60 series is now 2-3 years old at least and probably the last drives they made. Seagate also appears to no longer offer anything in that format. Samsung is about your only other choice, the Spinpoint N1 series looks like it would work. I'd just find a model you like and search for prices on that model # and see where you can find it. Anyone who is a specialty 1.8" hard drive supplier is gonna hit you over the head anyways for stocking a selection. There are some 1.8 SSDs floating out there too, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

You could direct your cousin to www.ifixit.com. There, they can order a new or used 1.8" 4200rpm hard drive. While these hard drives are geared toward iPod owners, they should work in any computer that use 1.8" drives.
