I was thinking of a getting a fairly large capacity SD card to use via USB 2.0 port, but was wondering if there are good alternatives?

Well USB thumb drives can be really inexpensive nowadays. ( www.newegg.com)
I saw an 8GB for $20 today... and they had a 32GB for $75 I think...
You could also buy some RW DVD... those are slower but much cheaper.
You can also get a USB powered external hdd (they use laptop drives).
You can around 250GB on sale for $100-120 or so (WD passport drives for instance) -
although its good to keep them around 120 gigs someone told me thats around the line for usb power but smaller=cheaper. also if you have a laptop drive layin around just buy a case for it.

those usb memory cards which are extremely cheap are really slow, so if you have a lot of patience, than they will be fine, but usually people want fast memory cards, and usually those cost like $50 for a 4gb one.
I recommend you getting an external harddrive as the others mentioned. It will be great for holding data, or playing a movie off of it. Making an enclosure or buying one is also a good idea if you already have a drive available.
You can also use floppies if you are looking for affordability. I think thousands of people will give you their floppies for free. They may be 1.44mb, but with a few thousand of them you can have a few Gb of space on hand for free
You can also try Compact flash cards for storage, since those work really well and are relatively cheap per Gb capacity.

It depends what you're doing. If you're running around all day and sharing files between people and computers, I would recommend a USB Flash drive. If all you need to do is share files between a home computer and say a laptop, then I would go for the External HDD.
Good portable data solutions besides SD cards?
