I'm wanting to upgrade my Gateway P-6831FX because I'm running SupCom at -4 speed on maps with 3v3 or 4v4 with it's T5450.

It's going for around $315 shipped right now. I was wondering if it would drop soon with news of Puma around the corner. I'm also curious as to when quad cores will be available for Socket P... though I worry about the heat and power consumption.

It's not really priority for me since if it's not me bogging, there's a chance for the other 5-7 players to bogging me down as well.

That is a good price. However you have to make sure what CPUs you Gateway support. If the T9 series is the max it can hold, you're safe getting it now, if it can house other CPUs(unlikely) you could wait.
I supose the max CPU for it is the X9000 ,but totally unwanted due to the price.
A T9300 can be taken up to 3.0 Ghz safely and easily.

Prices may not go down. They could go higher the Merom socket M CPU's are the most expensive per clock versus say socket P Merom and Penryn. The most expensive CPU NewEgg lists is T7400 costs more than T9300.

I guess if you are buying a retail, there may not be any difference in price (i.e. it won't go down a lot). If you are buying OEM or used, it would be better to wait a little bit. I got my OEM T7800 for $220 from ebay some weeks after penryn release :)
