1 gig ddr2 @533, 100 gig 5400 rpm hdd, x200m chipset, its not that the rest of the computer is all that slow, just the processor is holding it back so much. I have an e6300 overclocked to 3.16ghz with ocz gold xtc ddr2-800 @900 mhz and when i go between the 2, my laptop is unbarably slow. I just want something that is faster, some kind of a pentium m that is compatible, and less then $250.

Maybe, its not hardware, but maybe your software might slowing it down. Have you tried doing a fresh clean install of the OS??

My sister got Celeron M also, but I didnt notice any slow down while using it normal tasks. Also, my Celeron, doesnt slow down me at all. Well, it is depending on what are you doing it.

I think the Pentium M 700 series (Dothan) will work in your laptop but i am not sure. Only problem is that the highest clock speed is 2.26GHz(Pentium M 780) which is about 400/500+ and is nowhere near the speeds of the E6300 but if you want and upgrade for the 390m, get the and Pentium M 750, 760, 770,780

Yeah, in my normal day, I used word processing, music, online video, dvd, basic tasks, none slow down. And don't forget, my Celeron CPU is much older then the Celeron M.

Go to Toshiba's website first and see if they have Bios updates for the Pentium M processor. On the Hp website they had a little blurb about what each bios version update did.

This may also work for you as well since you have the 533 bus,

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3226&article=pin+mod

It may be worth a try since I just picked up the exact processor in this article for $40. Mine has a 400Mghz bus so it isn't overclocked but yours would be 2.1G with your bus speed! Check out my sig to see the difference between a 1.3G celeron and a 1.6G Pentium M on my superpi score. It's a worthy upgrade if it is possible on yours?

    Wait,

Are you trying to compare against your overclocked desktop Core 2 Duo?

Yeah. The desktop is going to be faster.

However, in 'regular' apps like Office, IE, etc. it isn't likely going to make a huge difference to you if you change the CPU. Have you noticed that the hard drive light goes on a lot more than your desktop? Or is it actually just real 'waiting' time, as in the hard drive light isn't going on... how do you know it's the processor?

In laptops, a lot of the subsystems are quite a bit slower than desktops. Hard drives in laptops are much slower than their desktop counterparts. The memory system is also slower. Games will be tons slower considering the graphics chipset that you're likely to have on your desktop compared to that Xpress 200M... and that certainly won't be helped by a better CPU.

Everyone has a different 'normal' routine... would help if you elaborated a bit on that.

Just did the same thing on my daughter's toshiba, MX35-149s with a Celeron M 340, 1.5ghz. Upgraded to a Pentium M 725, 1.6ghz without a hitch. I've seen about 25%-30% increase on PCMark05 and my Super PI 2M went from 3m 31s to 2m 8s. Make sure you upgrade to the latest bios, and stick with a CPU that has the same FSB, package type and volatge. Not a bad upgrade for $27, now I can hold off on buyer her a new laptop, till she is off to college! :D :D :D

The best thing to do would be a re-install I think. My celeron-m is perfectly quick enough (my hdd is the bottleneck), as yours is the quickest of the -300 series I doubt it's the cpu.
